Thanks for the feedback...I took all your thoughts and ideas to heart, so here is what I ended up doing. I got her jewelry and did the money flowers; turns out it was 1) her Bat Mitzvah 2) her actual birthday 3) first day of Hanukkah!

As for the recipes, turned them into the greeting card by using the booklet feature in Word. Made a nice cover with personal message inside and included some of the easier recipes I collected from here/other friends, with some "borrowed" pictures to include off the internet. See the list below.

Thank you everyone for all your help!

REC: Rich Honey Cake with Cocoa and Orange

Rich Honey Cake with Cocoa and Orange
makes 1 8x4 loaf cake

1 1/2 c all -purpose flour
1/2 c sugar
2 T unsweetened cocoa
2/3 c honey
1 1/2 t baking powder
1/2 c vegetable oil
1/2 t baking soda
1 T grated orange rind
1/2 t cinnamon
1/4 c water
1/2 t ground ginger
1/2 c pecans, coarsely chopped (optional)
2 large eggs

Preheat oven to 325F. Lightly grease an 8x4 loaf pan, line with parchment paper or foil and grease paper or foil.

Sift flour with cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and ginger. Set aside.

Beat eggs lightly in mixer. Add sugar and honey and beat until mixture is very smooth and lightened in color. Gradually add oil and beat until blended.

Beat in orange rind. Stir in flour mixture alternately with water, each in two batches. Stir in pecans (if using).

Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake about 1 hour or until cake tester in center comes out clean.

Cool in pan for about 15 minutes. Turn out onto rack and carefully peel off paper. Wrap in foil when completely cool. (If tightly wrapped, will keep at room temperature 2 weeks)

Serve in thin slices. Makes about 10 servings.

How lovely!

And because you included my gran's recipe, I feel that her memory is extending past my family. smileys/smile.gif

Thanks all, it was a really fun party too! Just saying DJ with dancers was inspired

The DJ was wireless so was up on the floor and he had 2 hip-hop guy dancers with him that got the crowd up and moving. (I wondered if they doubled as Zumba instructors during the day.) However, they came with all kinds of props (instruments for conga line/glow sticks/disco flashing wearables/laser disco ball/etc), got up and taught dance moves to young/old, kept the kids entertained, and generally kept it all moving all the time. Totally stealing this idea next time I do an event with a DJ.
