Because you will understand

Because you are my people I know you’ll understand what I mean when I say, the peaches were just so-so.

While everyone said how delicious my pie was, I knew how much better it could be if only the peaches were better. There is a special sadness when you go to the work to make an everything from scratch pie and then it turns out something like so so peaches just takes it down a big notch.

I had high hopes because I could actually smell the peaches in Safeway, so I thought I might get lucky. Next week I’ll go to the farmers market, but honestly I haven’t tasted a good peach in quite a number of years and it’s just getting old. What’s the deal with peaches?

Peaches here have been great from the Growers Market. Trouble with peaches is that they bruise so

easily. I am careful to pick out peaches which do not have any bruises and by the time I get home they are bruised.. Hubby INSISTS on going with me to carry my market basket, which is great as it gets very heavy, BUT he has no clue about putting heavy tomatoes on top of the peaches. I have yet to perfect my routing this year so I get the hard stuff on the bottom. People line up to get n line for peaches, and I am not willing to stand out in the hot sun to wait. I go early, and want to get out before it gets too hot. He is no longer able to shop for me like he used to, which made it easy as I would get certain stuff and he would get the rest. Ugh!
The bruised peaches begin to go fast, and I hate paying the price for them so I tend to use as much of the peach as I can.. Red Haven are a favorite of mine . It has been a good season, for them, even with all the rain we had. Black berries are huge this year, and strawberries are outstanding.

The secret for peaches is not to refrigerate them and unless you can get them from

an orchard or someone who goes TO the orchard, that is hard. Also if they got the fuzz it tells you it is not long off the tree because they haven't cooled them or washed them--and you WILL eitch!!
Peaches do bruise easily but if you are getting that then you are getting really close to very ripe peaches--another plus. Even here the peaches in the market now need a day on the counter although you "can" eat them now. But another day or so to develop the sugars will always help.
I will, if I must, eat tomatoes out of season (as in "non-summer tomatoes) and other berries, etc. But NEVER peaches out of season!!
Which reminds me, I need some local nectarinesm of which there are really not many, but oh so good.

I can so relate Maria - although with me it's always been blueberries

Most of my blueberry pies are now made with frozen blueberries (except for during the height of blueberry season) because I've made too many that were such a disappointment because the blueberries weren't terrific. Such a disappointment when that happens

I always refrigerate my peaches, I like them cold. If I leave them on the counter

they do not last at all.. I get them from the Farmers Market, only. Their season is almost over.

oh, when ripe, yes, refrigerate. But even our FM can use a day on the counter to

sweeten up. But if refrigerated when unripe, they will not ripen--just get mealy, IME.
Our FM peaches come from local growers in deep peach country!!
