Blog Advice or Direction

I am thinking about a more or less private blog to be able to post some recipes and food photography. I am a total non tech person and want a simple, easy, pay a fee and get a site type of thing. What do I need to know. What are the best blog sites? Any advice appreciated even if it is that I shouldn't do this.

Earnie, I don't blog, but lots of people I know (include some here?) use this one:

www.blogger.com

I use Blogger, Earnie...

If you just want a simple blog, I think it will be fine for you. If you ever have questions (I'm pretty non-techy myself), please send me a PM or email (lizzy dot do at gmail.com)...and I'd be happy to help smileys/smile.gif

I use wordpress and my hosting service attached it to my website.

I found the hardest part was finding a wordpress theme - there was so many awesome ones to choose from. Wordpress is free.

Is this being done for profit, or just for personal pleasure?

You said it was going to be more or less private, so can I assume it is not-for-profit? Or, do you hope to build a following and make money?

A casual blog as a hobby doesn't put much pressure on you to constantly update, research and respond to your readers. A blog that is meant to make money is a whole 'nother beast.

I'm on Blogger, but expect to move my blog to WordPress eventually. WordPress is the benchmark.

Wordpress user here.....

... cannot recommend highly enough.

I had ZERO knowledge of HTML, knew nothing about uploading files, and had limited time to dedicate to learning about it.

Wordpress.com has a support forum that is hard to beat - extremely helpful and patient folks ready to pretty much hold your hand through the whole process.

you should take a look at this link

http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/01/14/want-to-share-learn-wordpress/

they recently published this in their support forum, to help people who might be interested in starting a blog - I guess it would be very helpful for you

Private and for my pleasure only

I belong to a group that cooks from a certain cookbook and posts the results weekly. I would like to e able to use a blog rather than my flicker account. A blog (mostly private) would allow me to post a response and pictures.

After Traca's advice I moved to WordPress, I like WordPress but

it's what I started using almost from Day 1.

They have a great spamguard and I like the analytics.

Thank you all

Thank all of you for your suggestions and help. I appreciate the information and am still wavering as to whether I even need a blog.

Earnie, I maintain two blogs, one public, one private. On the private one, I keep

a wealth of notes, images, etc. It's my go to spot for being able to find all the stuff I'm looking for (did I bookmark that article, e-mail it to myself, or see it somewhere online? Now I just copy the entire text and post it in my blog. I always know where to find stuff now. So much easier.)

Another person I know keeps a private blog for his investing notes. Every day, he highlights information he's read, etc.

Many chefs I know maintain flavor journals and notebooks with recipe ideas. Taking that kind of information online is also helpful. Again, even if it's private.

FYI - You can change your blog status to public or private. I'd recommend starting private, if that's the way you want to go, then making it public if you decide to go there. If you make it public and then switch to private, your previous content is still 'out there' on the web.
