Bobby Flay always finds a way to irk me.

I was watching the newest version of Next Food Network Star and this season they are broken into 3 teams. The teams are lead by Alton Brown, Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis. Bobby Flay came out and introduced himself, "Chef Brown" and "Ms De Laurentiis". Why was she not addressed as chef? She attended the Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. He always acts so superior and just irks me.

He does have an attitude of sorts...can't put my finger on it. He is well trained but probably

not a well as Giada. Both have had stellar careers.

Geez, I was just starting to warm up to him. I find him off-putting but then on his "Throwdown" show

you see a side of him where he genuinely likes the other cooks.

It's possible Ms. Giada chose to be titled that way. I've always thought a chef is someone who runs a restaurant kitchen, which would eliminate Mr. lton too. When did it become an honorarium?

I have trouble with that terminology as well. It is difficult to determine how people

qualify a 'chef' these days. Someone who has been to school, but to what level? Is it a profession which sees you cooking/preparing for others or someone who is just involved in the food industry somehow?

The French term is "chef de cuisine" which simply means "kitchen manager."

You don't have to go to school to be one, necessarily. Here, I don't think they give you a title when you complete culinary school.

When I cater or teach people call me "chef" and if I protest they say, "but you have the white coat." Like anyone couldn't go out and buy one!

tried to stop into "B-Side"

Latest issue of food and wine mentions one of his Proteges so I left early for an airport run to make a pitstop there trying to get to her new BBQ in Oakland: B-Side. I couldn't believe it when I got there that it closes as 6pm. SO disappointed. (amping up for BBQ only to get shutdown!) Seems like in these times when restaurants are struggling a waste of great media exposure. But anyway Bobby Flay comes across with a NY attitude and that is always going to annoy some people but he doesn't bug me the way he used to. (at least one of us has mellowed with age) I remember him facing off against Morimoto on Iron Chef and he really p'd off Morimoto by climbing up on his kitchen work surface after winning. He responded by saying (along the lines) that it was disgraceful by Japanese standards.

I remember that episode! Morimoto is the king of the icy glare. smileys/wink.gif

A pity about the BBQ place. Closing at 6 pm seems nuts.
