Buying new blender: How high speed should a blender have??

It seems to me that the speed wouldn't matter as much as power.. is that the same thing?..or design.

For example, I have a KitchenAid with a broad base, supposed to be better at mixing icy drinks, smoothies, etc and it is, but not as effective at other applications. So I got a Krups with a narrow base and use it if not using ice in the mix. I'll admit I seldom use either of them. Good for Pesto, though.

*LOL* you are totally right. I'm so challenged when it comes to mechanical stuff smileys/smile.gif

Depending on what you use your blender for, you might consider a stick blender.

I love mine and use it all the time for pureeing soups etc. I do have a traditional blender for the kids to make smoothies, but they rarely use it. My stick blender gets used all the time.

Dawn, I've been thinking about this and am going to buy one soon...

I know you've posted your brand before but don't remember which it was. I think I'd use one, alot.

What brands can people recommend? thx

Mine is a Braun 22 watt, that I purchased at Costco a couple years ago. It has held up very well.

I just used mine on the Cauliflower Truffle Soup for lunch today. It's a KitchenAid, I

really like it, but haven't used any other brand. Again, I really don't use it that often. It works great to puree soups in the pan. I'd definitely go to a store where several brands are on display and see how they fit your hand for size and ease of use. One difference I notice between the standing and immersion blender is that the standing blender allows hands off use that's needed for drizzling oil for mayo, etc. That may just be mine, anyone else on this?

I think Dawn has the right idea--depends on use.I have a cheapo blender that I

get out a couple of times a year. I use my also cheapo stick blender more than that. But if you make alot of smoothies and such, you might like a high wattage stand blender.

I already own a stick blender. I need a blender for

making smoothies, so it needs to be able to handle ice cubes.

Thank you so much for yout tips and inputs smileys/smile.gif. I think I'll check out the Krups blender >>>

it seems to have what I'm looking for.
If I don'tlike it, rvb*s smoothie machine looks promising too.

Thanks you for sharing your experiences with blenders smileys/smile.gif))

I discovered that the stick blender is awesome for smoothies

The one I have here may be commercial grade or something, I don't know. It's on semi-perma-borrow status from my partner's chef brother. It is very powerful though, and my son made a great smoothie the other day with unsweetened yogurt drink/kefir, fresh strawberries, and chunks of ghiradelli white chocolate. It was delicious, although I thought it would be too liquid for me. I usually only like them made of all frozen ingredients, so thick that a normal blender can barely handle them and a straw would be pointless.

Do stick blenders normally grind plum seeds to nothing in a short time? I really don't know if this one is 'normal' or not, kind of curious...

definitely with you on this one

There are some things that I just can't imagine the stick/wand/immersion blender to do anything for. Pesto, mayo, etc. Isn't it just for pureeing? Whereas a standing blender can leave a rougher texture if you're careful?
