Calif, Wash, Oregon people. I am so worried about everyone. And the land, the wildlife, the

penned-up animals. I hope, what a ridiculous statement, but are you all okay?

The past few days here, in Canada, we have been able to see across the street but the smoke from the south is SO distressing.

I find it difficult to concern myself with how my tomato tart turns out.

We are hanging in there....

Here in the San Francisco bay area the air quality has been up and down the past few weeks but mostly pretty bad. Bad enough 2 weeks ago we woke up one morning with headaches due to the smoke and decided to immediately pack up the car with camping gear and head north along the coast to cleaner, more breathable air. That proved to be a good move. Returned home 6 days later after local fires had died down a bit but now there are more fires, smoke and heavy ash which has settled on everything, both outdoors and indoors. And to add to all that we were also dealing with about a week of 100+ degree days. To be honest, it's all a bit much at times. To cope we seem to have developed a habit of eating crunchy snacky things like popcorn, potato chips and chocolate bars (foods I never buy unless we are going on a road trip), as well as ice cream which seems to have ventured beyond the limits of "an occasional treat". But now, surprise!!!, the scales are letting us know that we will soon need to acquire new coping mechanisms. smileys/wink.gif

We are keeping our fingers crossed the fires will soon be under control and healthy air will return. Thank you for thinking of us, Marg. It does my heart good to read when folks post their recipes and results, so please share your tomato tart and other stories. I'd *love* to know how your tart turned out.

Thank you for responding. I look down the coast and worry, though I cannot see the Olympics any more

I know you are out there beyond. I just cannot imagine how you must be feeling, if anything. I think we are all hoping for rain on Tuesday.

I so hate these forest fires that I cannot and do not watch the news.

I had been thinking about you. Glad that you checked in.

I too hope that the fires are under control soon and you can get back to breathing normally.

Thank you, Marg and Judy. There are folks who have lost everything to the fires so

so what I am personally dealing with is nothing in comparison.

Praying for rain!!

As Pat said, the smoke has been pretty bad...

There was a time I considered evacuating with big out of control fires on two sides of me and had everything piled by the door to grab/go. Been basically stuck in the house since the beginning of August with either smoke/fire or heat. It hit 112F one day and I’m 10 miles from the ocean. The day the sky turned from yellow to red was the worst though. It felt like being in a sci-fi movie or on mars. That was a bad mental health day I admit. It was so dark all day you had to turn the lights on in the house.

Grateful for what’s still standing, but heartbroken over things gone. I know 2 people who lost everything. So I’m grateful. Doesn’t mean I don’t have a constant headache/sore throat/burning nose/tearing eyes 24/7. However, right now friends in Oregon have it worse. The bad air index (that everyone checks multiple times per day now) maxes out at scale of 500. Some friends in Oregon are at over 700. Pictures don’t do it justice because the camera auto adjusts to clear up photos.

Everything is covered in ash. I now go rinse off the garden. I put out bowls of water for wildlife fleeing.

Still cooking though. Making Yotam Ottolenghi's Sweet Corn Polenta with Eggplant Sauce again tonight. Soon I’m trying Mollie Katzen's zucchini feta pancakes, because not fire, nor lightening, nor extreme heat stops the zucchini from giving forth from the garden.

Thank you for reporting in. What about mistral, Traca, cheezz, LisainLA, Luisa, Susan

and Eileen (although that may be her sisters home)? Has anyone heard from Joe Corso?

Please stay safe.

We are fine between the citycSan Diego and the Jamul Valley fire

it's mostly contained now. I keep fighting with DH because he wants to open up for "fresh" air but it's unhealthy with smoke particles. Bad for my mild copd and asthma
A friend's home in the middle of the fire was spared although others nearby burnt. I think her husband kept their rural little farm well-scraped around the house.

It has been a rough three years for us here in Redding. First, we had a huge portion

of the west side of town, residential burndown. Then we lost the hilltown of Paradise. Then we had snowmageddon and personally had to spend $13,000 to repair fences, sidewalks, clear debris, from fallen trees, part of the roof gutter. We had it easy compared to a lot of folks, so never complained. Then came the big hail storm, which has resulted in most of the roofs in our neighborhood being replaced . and thousands of dollars in damage to cars in the area which were outside. Then COVID, now the fires all around us. Still, we are better off than a lot, so try to not complain. A big joke around town is what next, frogs, (had them one year so bad, the streets, sidewalks were covered with millions of them) or maybe it was caterpillars, I have forgotten. Air is so bad, those who have horses have to clean their eyes, flush noses, and hose off the ash. My pooch's white fur on paws and face has turned grey due to ash. I have to brush her everyday after we get her out for her walk before the smoke settles in for the day. Ugh

DDIL says a front is coming in on Oregon with rain that hopefully may help.

Her daughter goes to OU the end of the month. And they live in Colorado where last week's freaky snowfall helped with their wildfires.

Fires in Oregon are terrible. the entire community of Talent was taken out

hotels are full, folks have no place to go, they are ending up in parking lots, forming an evacuation city. So horrendous. Holidays are coming up and I think this will be a bad season for most of us. I cannot even think about Christmas right now with so many suffering..

Yes, basically a line of fire is from Portland to CA boarder

And that’s not even half of it.

Saw folks on tv who lost their house in Paradise fire who just lost their home again in the current fire nearby. That fire burned 1200 mi.² so far.

It’s starting to get confusing on TV when they say things that you go, wait, that burned in the last fire. Is this an old or new story they are talking about? like tonight the observatory on Mount Wilson in Southern California they saved again tonight I guess. Everything just becomes one big giant fire.

I heard from a redwood (forest) league tonight and there is a big concern the winds shifted and the great Sequoia trees are threatened, if not some burned already. They don’t recover like the redwood trees.
