Can anyone tell me about goat meat? How to buy it? What to look for? I'd like to

try Jamaican Goat Curry and have located a few Haitian and Caribbean grocery stores here in Naples but what should it look like? Really red like lamb or beef? Or more pink like pork? I figured that I love goat cheese so I may like goat curry. Thanks!

I can't tell you about buying it, but I can tell you about its taste.

It's a very rich game flavor. If you like venison or quail, you'll probably like goat, although it doesn't taste like either of those. It's that wild game taste. It's very popular in the Alps and it's usually on most restaurant menus there.

go into a meat market that sells goat and...

ask a customer.

like other meats you can tell if it isn't good by the smell.

Watch the age of the animal if possible

Richard's description fits with a mature animal, I always try for one under 4 months if possible or as young as I can find. Older animals are strong and tough.

I would call all the local butchers, and also goat breeders. They may dress out a baby goat for you.

I always soak the meat in water: for each gallon of water juice about 3 lemons in and soak for a few hours. Good baby goat tastes like a cross of rabbit, venison and beef.

sky that makes sense since I only recall having goat in

ragout/stew type preparations. Now I need to find out what young grilled goat tastes like.

Thanks for the explanation.

Cooking it over an open flame also enhances it

I forgot to mention that- I guess since it isn't really relevant to Val's question. I find the age of the goat to make a huge difference in goat, much more than I would expect from other meats. I love goat but a mature animal can be a bit much for even me lol, unless I cook it in very specific ways.

Tastes sort of like beef to me...one month in Virgin Islands in college where goats are plentiful...

We were in an old Sea-Bee's camp doing marine biology projects. Goats are common on the islands, so the cook made various goat meat recipes. I enjoyed it...to me it tasted like rich beef pot-roast but stringier. I cannot stand venison or "gamey" tasting meats at all, including wild duck, but I enjoyed the goat.
