Can anyone tell me about pie birds?

I just bought the cutest Spode Christmas Tree pie dish and it came as a set with a pie bird. Has anyone used one before, or do you know how to use them? I have an antique chef one but I never knew what to do with it. Thanks

just put it ontop of your bottom crust, place your filling around it and then leave it's little head

poking out the middle of your top crust (poke a little hole in the crust for it).
