Can someone suggest the best chicken base/cube etc. for when good canned stock in not available? TI

Hi Janet,

I really like the Better Than Boullion line of bases. Right now I have the Organic Beef and I am really happy with it. I have used the chicken before and I really liked it too.

Just got this in an email from America's Test Kitchen, looks like they agree with Dawn smileys/smile.gif

"So what chicken broth product should you reach for when you haven't got time for homemade? We recommend choosing a mass-produced, lower-sodium brand—and check the label for evidence of mirepoix ingredients. (The best-tasting brands get help from vegetables, a glutamic compound, or both.) Swanson Certified Organic was our clear favorite, but the less expensive, third-place Swanson Natural Goodness was solid as well. And if you don't mind adding water, Better Than Bouillon chicken base came in a very close second—and was the favorite of several tasters."

Thanks, my son lives in Switzerland and is the family cook.......

and the proud owner of a new large LeCreuset pot. He is so anxious to try it out but I know from shopping there that there is no canned or packaged stock available. He has been at the mercy of boullion cubes and I knew there must be something better that I can take him. I will certainly try your suggestion. Has anyone tried Penzys?

That's the one and only for me.... REAL beef and chicken stock.... not all salt like the cubes - YUK

Yes, Penzey's chicken base is good, HOwever, the Better Than Bouillion is...

about 30% less expensive. IF your grocery stores ahve BTB, it is more convenient to use.

My vote for Better than Bouillion-I've used, chicken, beef, turkey, ham and clam. The only thing ..

they don't have is lamb. Knorr makes lamb cubes but does not sell them in the US. Every time my friends or I go to UK we lay in a stash. Last time it was in Harrods in London.
