not sure how I survived this, considering that the first genoise cake I baked two days ago was consumed by our dalmatian in a few minutes of lack of our attention during Christmas eve dinner prep

oh, well - live and learn

two layers of genoise soaked in coffee syrup, two layers of chocolate mousse, chocolate ganache on top, sides covered in almond roasted in cocoa syrup

I am spent!

but today is my beloved's Birthday, and this will be his cake!

That cake is stunning Sally! How did it taste? About the dog....

you are so lucky he did not end up at the vets. That cake he consumed had a few doggie No-No's in it.

Funny Christmas story from this weekend. Our son and dil have a 1 1/2 year old Pie Bald Dachshund. Training is in progress. We have a dog that will not bother our food, even if we place a snack on our chair or a foot stool if we have to leave the room for a minute or two. So I was eating a light lunch, some deli chicken meat, swiss cheese, plus a few veggies. I set my plate down on the chair in their great room to get up and see something. When I came back the dog was eating my food. I was so embarrassed for putting my dil in that position. Kept thinking to my self the rest of the weekend, "THINK". I was happy it was just, "us" at that moment and not a house full of company as we had later that night.

We won't try it until tonight.... (more)

the cake this animal consumed was the plain genoise, without any syrup or any additional stuff in it. Basically just eggs, sugar and a little flour - a lot of sugar, but I tell you, this dalmatian has already eaten a bar of soap, two sticks of butter, a loaf of bread, and a few other things I don't remember at the moment. We call him the fastest mouth in the west.

He did not even barf, or had other "issues" - never seen a happier dog after the crime (sigh, sigh, sigh)

Beautiful Torte!

Oh the things the pups manage to snap up. I don't want to even think all the things our dachshunds have scarfed down. Or the various aftermaths.

Congratulations!

Cake is awesome! even if I say so myself... (more)

my whole dinner was a gift for him, and I must say I hit the jackpot with my menu

Phil has always talked about a Persian rice his friend from Iran used to make when they lived together in their hippie years in California

well, I FINALLY tried to make it and nailed it! THe rice was wonderful, with that beautiful golden crust of butter and saffron on top, perfectly cooked. They say it is hard to get it right the first time you make it, so I was lucky

I served it with chicken thighs (boneless, skinless) in a saffron, turmeric & cinnamon sauce with apricots and prunes. Green beans steamed as a side dish

he was thrilled, and so was I...

both recipes for dinner were from The Saffron Tales, a very nice cookbook I got not too long ago
