cast iron lovers

also I've looked at a few other manufacturers

I try to buy Made in the USA. Lodge is the default and has good products at reasonable prices.

A lot of the contemporary cast iron just aren't very good (several made in China). The interior surface is so rough that it does not hold seasoning well and they are harder to clean when the surface is so rough.

I found this other company that offers the smoother interior surface. Also newer company Made in the USA.

I really recommend shopping flea markets and looking for bad looking skillets

which may be harder to find these days. You can reclaim these pretty easily--put them in the oven when you do a self cleaning and then start the curing/seasoining process. It won't take long.

I have a growing collection from doing that

but I've found that the best ones have a nice, smooth interior surface. That is why I was looking at these two manufacturers. And the fact that they are lighter is a bonus.

My old ones are heavy but REALLY smooth inside. Unfortunately maybe the ones

showing up now are not all that old, and are of the type being sold that aren't well sanded down inside.

Interesting you mention "lighter".... I love cast iron; not just the seasoning, cooking, but also

the history. BUT, I have found them to be too heavy for me. My friends use them often. I love how they are now "in" Thanks for the recommendations, I will check them out. Just typing this, brings back bad memories of my wrist hurting from cooking!

The ones with "helper handles" really make a difference, particularly if they

are also wide.

I'd be tempted to buy the Field Skillet, Paul

It does look good.

Lodge is the brand I am most familiar with and have owned for many, many years. I LOVE the weight, the way they cook, the way they clean up. But in my book I know I must "earn" that smooth finish. It comes after years of seasoning and proper use. I wouldn't give up my big skillet for anything even if in the future I have to have my DH carry it for me. It never sticks. I think I paid $20 for it.
