Cherry question. I want to bake Tom's Cheery Cherry Berry Pie 2009 National Pie Champion

This pie recipe calls for 4 1/2 cups Montmorency tart cherries. Trader Joe's carries Montmorency dried cherries. Could I hydrate them? I had success hydrating raisins for Carole Walters Oatmeal Raisin Cookies.

Since I'm asking are dried Michigan cherries close to Montmorency dried cherries?

I'd think you'd want fresh, frozen or canned cherries for the right

filling consistency. Reconstituted dried cherries are no more like fresh than a reconstituted sun-dried tomato is like a fresh tomato. But it might make an interesting pie. smileys/smile.gif

I think dried Michigan cherries are a little sweeter than sour Montmorency, but given the small amount used in the recipe I don't think a substitution would throw things off that much.

Sounds like a good pie!
