Michael, I got an answer from leite's culinaria: If not dipping in chocolate, can use the extra

1/2 cup sugar to dip the peels. If dipping in chocolate, you just need the 1 1/2 cups sugar heated with the water to make the peels.
(They corrected the recipe on the site).
