Chocolate Martinis and ?

Two couples are coming to my house this weekend to have drinks and appetizers and then out to dinner. They requested chocolate martinis. I'm trying to locate a good chocolate martini recipe as well as some appetizers that would complement the drink. I think of chocolate martinis as more of an after-dinner drink, but that's what they like.

Also most of the appetizer recipes that I prepare compliment wine or a dry "drink before dinner" drink. For this reason, I'm finding it more difficult to come up with a good combination of drinks and apps.

I knew this was the right place to come for suggestions. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Oh My Linda Barbara, I sure hope someone here can help you.

And I feel lucky I'm not in you're shoes! Good Luck!

I might be about to stick my foot in my mouth--a habit of mine--but...

...a couple of questions...

1) Did you ask these couples what they wanted to drink when you offered the invitation? (If not, skip straight to the step where you buy wine, create your favorite appetizers, and put your feet up--with no guilt.)

2) Is there a chance they're joking?

(I know this maybe not the most helpful suggestion, but if I were you and in this situation, I'd make some kind of champagne cocktail. (Or just a raspberry or strawberry in the flute.) And if anyone dared to say, "Where are those chocolate martinis?," I would laugh and trill like the brilliant hostess you must be, "Oh, how funny you are, Bob; what do you think this is, 'Mad Men'?"

In any case, cin cin! smileys/smile.gif

This link has yummy sounding chocolate martini recipes

I looked in my Scharffenberger chocolate cookbook (suggest ground chocolate rims) as well as Godiva and it may come down to what type of chocolate martini you want to make. The standard looks to be with vodka but some add creme de cocoa/cream and some even ice cream mix. Those would seem to be much sweeter and of course creamier. Example: Vodka with a splash of Godiva Chocolate Liquor, White Crème de Cacao in a cocoa rimmed glass and a Hershey's kiss.

I think a good choice would be to make something spicy to offset the chocolate. Even a spicy cocktail sauce to go with shrimp, mini crabcakes (with something like a jalapeno raspberry dipping sauce), spiced nuts, or something peppery but a little heat goes well with chocolate.

Here's another idea - Stuffed Figs Drizzled with Chocolate (with orange cream cheese stuffing):

I posted this on another forum, and everyone loved it.

STUFFED FIGS DRIZZLED WITH CHOCOLATE

1/2 cup pine nuts, toasted
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons grated orange zest
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
10 fresh figs, washed, stems removed
1/4 cup chocolate chips
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon Grand Marnier (one reviewer used a little juice from the orange)
1 orange, sliced

1. In a small bowl, combine the cream cheese, cooled pine nuts, orange zest, nutmeg and pepper, mixing until smooth.

2. Slice each fig in half lengthwise.

3. Press about a tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture into the cut side of each fig half.

4. Melt chocolate and butter in micro 1 minute; add Grand Marnier, stir till creamy.

5. Drizzle over stuffed figs.

6. Garnish on a platter with orange slices.

You all are going to think I'm obsessed, but lacquered bacon or pig candy would go with chocolate

Martinis. And I too suggest the spicy angle for a little bite.

Although I don't have a recipe I would recommend you find a chocolate martini recipe that uses creme de cacao and vodka rather than the creamier versions with Mozart or the other cream based chocolate liquers. I think avoiding the creamy factor will help it seem more cocktailish rather than a dessert drink.

This is really a tough one!! Do let us know how it works out!

Something spicy and sweet, perhaps? Music City Missy's Brie Kisses....

Just cut puff pastry into small squares, tuck them into mini muffing tins with the corners pointing up, add a small piece of Brie cheese and a bit of hot pepper jelly. Bake at 400*.

Marsha, your pecan recipe sounds great too. I've been wanting to make that for sooo long. Love ya.

Thank you for all your suggestions....

I love all your recommendations; I, too, was thinking of something similar to Meryl's pecan mix and/or Joe's Brie Kisses. Also because a chocolate martini is filling, I didn't want apps that would also be filling...I'll trudge on and let you know the outcome. Nothing like a nice dry martini or a glass of good wine for me, even though I love chocolate.

I'm curious about your guest...This request makes me think they

probably don't drink very often, or are young. I know I drank those super sweet drinks when I was younger and now I enjoy them only occasionally, after dinner. Wondering if this might be a good opportunity to offer something in addition to that and maybe expose them to something new. Again, when I was younger & didn't drink much, I had no idea what to order. Cocktails and even wine can be perplexing subjects. Obviously they like sweeter drinks. Maybe try something Proseco-based, then move on to the chocolate martini as a back up or round 2? Just a thought...

Chocolate Martinis and......

Hi Everyone,
Well, I got through my chocolate martini evening on Saturday. The guests who requested the chocolate martinis in the first place, actually had four each (that's right four martinis each) along with the follow apps. My husband must have made one heck of a drink! I chose wine smileys/smile.gif

Dawn's Black Pepper Almonds (truly addictive as promised);
Baked Brie topped with warm imported Italian honey and hazlenuts, served with delicate water crackers;
Fresh Herbed Veggie Dip with cruidte;
and for the wine drinkers:
citrus marinated olives served with fresh feta and toasted pita bread; and
small pepperoni squares

Believe it or not, we then went out to dinner at a place where the portions are enormous; they all came back to my house for coffee/tea and home-made oatmeal cookies.....

We did have a good time and thank you to all for the suggestions...I'm saving the recipes for next time.

sounds wonderful, but 4 each!! yowzer.

I had one as a dessert drink at a friend's wedding and whoa, one was more than enough!

Can you please share the recipe you used for the chocolate martinis?

I'm guessing you served the not-so-sweet vodka with a splash+ of creme de cacoa, maybe rimmed in chocolate syrup? I would love to be able to offer a combination that everyone will enjoy at holiday get togethers! Thank-you, Colleen
