Cold weather reminder: You can buy ham bones from HoneyBaked spiral ham stores.

The last time I bought three of them for $4 each. Ask at the counter. They had these in the back. These were big and still had a nice chunk of meat left on them.

Each one went into a big dutch oven for:

Mom's Ham Bones & Beans with sauerkraut

Red Beans and Rice

Hydeholde's bisque.

None of these recipes get made in my home unless a hambone is available. I appreciate Honeybaked for this opportunity.

I did this once for my split pea soup but it was waaaaay too sweet. Red beans & rice sounds good!

When I was making soups for the FM, I used to buy a ham and

have the butcher cut it into 3 or 4 pieces and then freeze them. They made a really nice soup with lots of ham and were very affordable.

I tried it a few times with Honey Baked and other brands of honey hams and the split pea soup...

...did come out too sweet.

I found myself adding a bunch of vinegar to it to counteract the sweetness.

Now I only use non-honey hams for pea soup. I imagine they could be good in other recipes, right?

Very creative idea! Thanks Steve! I often see them on sale, REALLY cheap, managers specials and

never know what to do with them.... I can only eat a few bites, then I am "Smoked Turkey'd" out....I like your idea w/ the soup!

Best,
Barb

No, not a honey-baked ham, just a normal one. Here in MO, I have found

a spiral sliced ham at Aldi's that I like. I only put a sweet glaze on the first half of the ham because I don't like the sweetness, or cloves in my soups that I make later.

I usually buy an extra turkey around the holidays and freeze it. Sometimes I smoke it...

...(they're sooo hard to keep lit!) and we eat what we want at the time and freeze the leftover meat for sandwiches, etc.

I love Steve's idea!
