Completely nfrc - is anyone else having trouble with almost EVERY site except for Finer Kitchens?!

I've been trying to log onto a few different sites for almost 2 hours now and it's extreeeeeeemely slow. But finerkitchens.com pops right up!

Maybe it's not me? I'd just like to know so I know if I need to make some repairs. But since Finer Kitchens comes through, maybe it's some other problem. It's about 9pm on Thursday night.

I always knew Finer Kitchens was a magical place, but...

When no other site will load, I click on FK to see if I'm really connected to the internet.

It loads the fastest of all my regular sites.

I always check Google because it pops up really fast. Then, if all else fails

I do a restart. If that fails I do a Shut Down. If that fails, I crawl under the desk and shut off the main surge protector. Our transformer gets hit a LOT with lightening storms and our Dell system seems to need a clean start-up when that happens.

I always get back my Internet connection after that.

Dawn, now that I think about it, here is one more problem we had. We would be connected and then not connected and then connected and then not connected. Roadrunner ended up doing the following:

0: Manually reset us over the phone after we called Tech Support.
Still didn't work consistently.

1. Gave us a new connection box.
Still didn't work consistently.

2. Rewired from the cable connection to the computer.
Still didn't work consistently.

3. Rewired from a different spot from the cable connection to the computer.
Still didn't work consistently.

4. Rewired from the front of our house to the cable box.
Still didn't work consistently.

5. Rewired from their main connection to the front of our house.
That worked!

Turned out the squirrels running along the wire cause pin-holes through the cabling which would let rain get in which break up the connection if more squirrels were running along the wire causing it to bend and open up the circuit.

The whole debacle took 6 weeks and 6 visits to the house to solve. Luckily, RR technicians were in the house from Steps 2 onward and could see how our connection was going in and out. Initially they just thought we were idiots.

I was unlucky enough (and careless enough) to download that MSNBC virus

on my laptop. I am on the old, very slow desktop, not that I am complaining, nice old desktop, and have been able to get files from the laptop in safe mode and transfer them to the desktop. I am waiting for an external drive to be delivered so I can back up all my files onto it. What a royal pain this has been.

Me too, Google first, then restart, then I unplug my modem and router from their power supply...

...because if I call tech support, that is ALWAYS the first thing they have you do. Then plug them back in, and try again. Often, that works. If it doesn't, it generally means an issue with my service provider and not my configuration. If I find I have to do that too often, then it usually means that my router is dying and I need to buy a new one.
