Confession-I buy a butt half ham a couple of times a year when they are cheap

Yum!

I'm not a big lover of ham but love ham bone stock, ham and bean soup! Sounds wonderful as we are having light snow flurries here!

I'm sorry, Melissa, but I can't get past saying *I buy a butt* over and over.

Apparently I am a 63-year old body trapped by a 4-year old mind.

I do the same, once they are on sale. I have a brand I like and I lay in wait.

Plus, when you have a house full of traveling college kids, a big tray of ham and noodles always gets raves!

and that song is going through my mind now: I buyyyy butt, and I cannot lie. . .

the big butts song. . .

I am sorry! smileys/smile.gif

Do you guys buy the whole, bone-in ham? I sure like those better than the spiral cut ones

The ones I have eaten at others home, are always overheated and dry. Or they might be good for the main mean, but the meat seems to dry out for the next uses.
Which brand do you like Michael?

Aldi's. 10 pounds, 10 bucks

I'll eat on it & threw quite a bit in the freezer. Half of big bone with meat in freezer. Pint jar of broth/fat in freezer.. Part of it will still probably end up freezer burned and thrown away. I'll have happy beans for a long time.

I only like spiral cut for sandwiches & it should barely be warmed up

My ex brother in law was a buyer for Handy Dan's. They used to get 4 or 5 Honeybaked for "suck up" presents at holidays. I did love those, but too sweet for cooking.

Really???? I never, ever, EVER find deals like that. And a bone is absolutely necessary for

my mom's Ham Bone and Beans.

Otherwise, not only is the soup missing flavor, the name goes all wonky.

Years ago, we had a honeybaked ham in our community. I loved their

ham salad, it was addictive and I bought it a lot. I guess the community did not support them enough because they left and never came back.

They are good but really outrageously expensive. If you do have one, they sell their ham bones!

They don't always have them but they are VERY meaty and make great soup.
I don't like spiral sliced hams because the slices are too thick for my taste.

I have bought their bones before; worked for my recipe. Michael

brought up the fact that the meat is very sweet--which can adversely impact a dish. In my case, mom's Ham Bone and Beans has sauerkraut in it, which probably cancelled out the sweetness and explains why I never noticed that issue.

Karen, here's their recipe for Ham Salad

HONEY BAKED HAM SALAD

3 cups chopped Honey Baked Ham
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon Honey Baked Hickory Honey Mustard

Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. Adjust to your own taste.

Melissa, I think you are so right about not over heating. The first time I served a good

pre-cooked ham, I didn't get it up to the temp recommended. And the first time there wasn't lots of liquid left from cooking it. They are precooked, I do believe the less heating the better. I think Cook's Illustrated says 110 is enough. Far better than the 140 plus on the label.
