cook the book

I'm making baked figs with Grand Marnier and whipped cream from Gourmet tonight. I will report in the cook the book thread tomorrow. I know it's a very simple recipe, but, my fig tree is producing like crazy and I have all the ingredients on hand. I have either had company or been traveling most of this month so wasn't able to get it together to try a new recipe sooner. I hope to do better with the next book. And may I suggest Around My French Table? I have not made a single recipe from it and apparently need to be forced to do so! BTW, if there is not some law against doing so, I would be willing to scan a recipe and email it to someone that does not otherwise have access to the book.

My in real life group did Around My French table last month. No earth shattering recipes, except for

the Marie Helene cake posted above. Nearly every month I race to make notes on my favorite recipes. This month? Everything we had was fine, but not spectacular. I'm beginning to think I'm more of a fan of Dorie as a person. Somehow, our palates are not on the same wavelength. Culinary point of view.

Knowing that, it doesn't sound like a good contender for our cook the book.

Pat, I'll bring the book to Petaluma in March if you want to borrow it.

I cooked several last winter when I got it and I was blown away by the flavors

very different for us, and most appealing with the unusual application of spices and foods that I had not experienced before. It is a fun book. I also love the way it is packaged......sort of padded.

Any familiarity with My Paris Kitchen by David Lebovitz? Another book that's high on my list to

acquire. When I leafed through it at the bookstore, every thing inside looked amazing.

I haven't played with My Paris Kitchen yet, or David's recipes. I have used his ice cream

book heavily and the recipes were good. I learned a lot from it.

Richard, lots of folks here lost fig trees and hydrangaes. Those were the two plants

hit hard last winter. I was very lucky that my fig tree survived nicely because it was in such a protected place. That being said, it was waaayyy to comfortable and taking over the world so we had to remove it. I do miss the figs a lot....

Try the tuna with lentil recipe and the basque tortilla--both were really good. I alwayst

get requests for those recipes when I serve to guests for lunch or light supper.
