Cooked and frozen Dungeness crab question.......

Has anyone bought one of those huge crabs in Costco, or elsewhere? What do you do with them, how do you re heat them? I've only had them boiled (or maybe steamed, I'm not sure) and they were delicious. I'm on the east coast so frozen is the only option here. Thanks for any information.

Are they Dungies or King crab. Never been to Costco, but understand they sell King crab from the

Russian fleets for a good price. They would be huge compared to Dungies, which I prefer. Either way, I would heat them with steam.

We enjoyed several at New Year's Eve and in February

from Costco in Salt Lake City for a treat while on vacation. I've also bought cooked and frozen Dungeness legs clusters from Krogers on sale twice - we now have 4 in the freezer saved for a special occasion.

I can only get defrosted cooked Dungeness crabs from Costco - they won't sell me frozen ones. The last time, my husband pulled the crabs apart, rinsed off the leg/shoulder clusters and we steamed them over simmering water for 6 minutes, IT WAS TOO LONG!!! (they were hot instead of warmed) - 3 or 4 minutes should have been enough.

In the past, we've steamed the frozen clusters for 8 minutes.

Darn. We're supposed to have BBQ ribs tonight but now I want crab! Colleen

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try it cold on a salad and if I don't like it

I'll steam it briefly. They are whole dungeness.

As a gal who grew up on the west coast, eating crab and now live inland but still lucky

to have a fish monger here who drives over to the coast every night to pick up fresh, live Dungeness, cooks it on premises. The crab is eaten either warm or cold. We love it cold, or room temperature. we serve fresh lemon juice, mayonnaise, or seafood cocktail for dipping. All you need is big green salad and sourdough bread.
Never freeze fresh Dungeness crab. It turns a pinkish color and the flavor is gone.

Ditto Nan I steam mine also and leave in the pot to get warm while eating

Have little chafing dishes under flame for garlic butter. That was to keep warm smileys/smile.gif

You're right. Not much flavor and very watery. I did dry it out with paper

towels and make a little salad with mayo and lemon on top of a green salad. OK, but not great dinner. I won't buy it frozen again. I did want to give it a try though.

We enjoy our Dungeness right out of the shell or dipped in butter

so I've never served it as crab salad - but I'm surprised. We have not found Costco's crab to be watery at all. Dh and I always rave (to each other) about the sweet flavor, as we quickly crack and scarf it down, because we far prefer Dungeness to the King or Snow. It is not the same as the fresh caught/cooked we once had on a Washington beach or when we can get Dungeness in a restaurant although we prefer the Costco over Joe's Crab Shack Dungeness (I'm guessing it's cooked/frozen, too). Maybe you got a "bad" batch - several days defrosted? I would complain at Costco and have them give you another crab. Colleen
