Cooking trout on a cedar plank?

A friend gave me some cedar planks, and we have been cooking salmon on them with great success. Last night we tried trout, and it was amazing, so moist and delicious.

We cooked it at the lowest heat on our gas grill for about 30 minutes. DH thinks that if we used only one burner to get even lower heat and cooked it for 2 - 3 hours, we would get a much stronger smoked flavor. Has anyone done this? Do you think it would work?

Never done it that way myself, but it seems like it would work, increasing the amount of time

that the smoke would be in contact with the fish.
