Crab season report!

Hello, after a long absence!

Just wanted to report that the San Francisco crab season is finally underway. Went with a group of SF Chronicle employees (former and current, and friends) for the 14th year of Crabonanza at Fisherman's Wharf early Sunday morning. We popped open corks of bubbly and Anchor Steam Porter and watched as Castagnola's team boiled huge dungeness crabs just for us. I ate an entire 2# crab and was still hungry! There was about 29 of us there in total, great fun. Afterwards we went to the Buena Vista for Irish Coffees and then home to pass out on the couch. Not a bad Sunday I must say. The extra week plus gave the crab some extra fattiness which was great, and it is very mild in flavor this year, perfect for garlic black bean crab I think. Hoping to eat more each week!

I love crab . . .

My friends know that if there are crab cakes on the menu I will order them. I spent a week in Boston a couple of years ago and ate crab cakes EVERY night at Legal Seafood - I even chose my hotel so I was next to Legal Seafood.

But . . . don't put a boiled crab in front of me! I can manage about one, then I freak. I'm sorta the same about cut up chicken. Every once a while I venture to cut up a chicken and sigh quickly in defeat.

Good to see you again Heather! Looks like you

had lots of fun and I love the photos.

I believe I have an Indian and Thai recipe for crab, but you may have to cook ‘em live?... smileys/wink.gif
