Dating spices?

There used to be a way to figure out the code on commercial spices to be able to date them. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

I usually call the company's 800 number and have them give me the ...

... meaning of julian codes. Most are happy to help.

By 'commercial', you mean 'retail' packages, right? Not food service packs?

I also have found that most manufacturers use their own system, so it might be different for each brand of spice.

Sarah, you can just go by taste and smell. If they are still fragrant, use them. They don't go bad

like other foods. They just lose their savor.
