Actually both men said it wasn't coffee they tasted, just a bitterness. But this did not stop them from scrapping their plates clean.
It was my own fault. I used Italian espresso beans, ground fine and then brewed 1.5 oz with just 2 cups of water in a stovetop 2-piece metal Italian espresso maker. That stuff was STRONG! and I used 60 percent chocolate, so I introduced the bitterness myself.
I'll definitely be making this cake again but will try hot water in place of brewed coffee.
