Delivered DD to grad school in Long Island

over a week ago. I thought I'd have time to shop and look for interesting food, but as it turned out, we spent most of our time assembling cheap furniture. Her desk ended up with its legs back to front, but by that we couldn't care less and just left it.

I was thrilled that we could meet Joe - it was so pretty drinking beer right on the beach, and Joe graciously did not complain when I ate all his calamari. Unfortunately, not one of us had a camera, but we had a wonderful time.

DD has been enjoying visiting the farmers markets and browsing new food stores. She went to a South African store today and had to be very strict with herself as we are penniless after moving her over there. However, she is going to get a lump sum just before Christmas, and has instructions to come home with large quantities of biltong, wine, chocolate and cherimoyas. In fact, when the cherimoyas turn up in the markets, she has instructions to pack unripe fruit carefully in a flat-rate box and send them home immediately! They are DH's favorite fruit, and our evil tree blooms but does not bear. (The flowers smell of rum truffles, and next year I am going to try to pollinate them with my paintbrush.)

We did notice one very puzzling thing. There is a quite extraordinary number of doughnut shops in Long Beach, and many of them are open 24 hours. I had every intention of visiting one to see if the doughnuts were different in any way, but we just never managed it. Every time DD calls, I ask if she has bought a doughnut yet, but so far she hasn't. When I manage to drag DH there (either this spring break or the next one, depending on the bank balance - he says never, in that case), I am definitely going doughnut shopping!

Lana! I'm so confused... Long Island is in New York and Long Beach is in California....

where is DD going to grad school? I thought Joe was here in Southern California...

Not as confused as I was, obviously, after a long day at pre-school orientation

I hope I didn't say anything that moronic to any of the parents who came in to talk to me (between 12 and 6 pm, without a break)! Of course it's Long Beach! Oops!

Definitely Long Beach, California. I so enjoyed meeting Lana and her DD,

and I ate plenty of Calamari. We were having a short streak of wonderful weather, the kind we pay a fortune to live in SoCal for, and the ladies were so appreciative. We had a nice afternoon break at my favorite brewery. (see link)

I had no idea there was a South African shop in my town but I'm not surprised. It is just about the most diverse city in the country. I think the donut shops can be explained by the number of truckers coming and going from the harbor. Lana, I really can't tell you which are best, so we'll have to research it together.

Is that the one with the giant donut on the roof? It's been there since I was a kid.

Does the LA area really have more donut shops than the rest of the country?

Funny, most of the donut shops near me are now owned by Asian immigrants, and they offer teriyaki too. The first time I saw "DONUTS! TERIYAKI!" on a sign I gagged, thinking they served them together.

I've been driving by my whole life--guess I'll have to exit the freeway someday and try it out.

Get there early and get 'em warm.... apple fritters are yum, and, of course, anything with chocolate

There is one on 7th and PCH in Long Beach with a big donut on the roof, but it's not as big as the

landmark Cheezz is talking about. I haven't bought a donut on 7th in many years, not because they aren't good, but because their coffee was terrible last time I tried.

Seriously, I only buy donuts a few times a year at most.
