Desperate for help with icing colors

I need to use black and bright red to decorate a Birthday Cake for my granddaughter. The cake will be dressed like a Soccer Player. My problem is that she has "Black Hair", "Black Shoes" and a "Red Shirt". As you experienced Bakers know, both red and black tend to have a bitter taste. I have ussed Wilton gel colors in the past. Are "Powdered Colors" any better? What do others use? I hope someone can help me. Thanks

tinting options....

Powders would probably be best but there are other options....For black icing I usually add cocoa powder before adding black tint...it does cut down on the bitter taste since not as much color is needed to get the icing dark.

Wilton makes a "No-Bitter Taste" red color that works pretty well. I have found if I mix the colors the day before using and refrigerate overnight the colors seem to intensify. Just be sure to give them a good stir before decorating with them.... Good Luck!

How about dark chocolate frosting with just a little black in there. Last summer...

I helped make someone a cake that called for a lot of red frosting, and we got Wilton's red gel that was called Red No-Taste. It was very good.

Actually I guess I was right on the money when I suggested the choc frosting. That's what Wilton suggests here>>

Good luck, sounds cute.

An alternative to frosting would be to use fruit leather for the red and

a black gumdrop flattened with a rolling pin and then cut out the hair, shoes and shirt. Just a thought.
