Did I accidentally make crème fraiche?!...

I (again) found a container of "something they forgot to put in the grocery bag" under the front seat of my car. It was a tub of sour cream, there for about 3 days.

Thinking to myself that it must be all soupy and gone bad, and that I'd have to throw it out, when I took off the plastic seal, it looked and smelled fine. So I tasted it, and it tasted like sour cream, only better, nuttier - and like crème fraiche.

I guess we need new shocks ;o) or to be more careful when taking bags out of the car, but I am wondering, did I inadvertently make myself some crème fraiche?! At $4+ a pint vs. $1.09 at walmart, I'll make it this way again!

Edited: Whoops, I forgot - it was in the trunk, not under the seat of my (hot) car. And it was before this awful 90+ heatwave... at about 80 degrees for about 3-4 days, maybe more.

When I make creme fraiche it's with cream and buttermilk & I put it in my computer for 24 hours

The computer's cover is loose so I can get in and out of it easily, and I just move the cover, put the jar right inside the computer and put the cover back on. The heat generated by the computer is just perfect for making creme fraiche. Unlike the car which is subject to the seasons, at least for us northerners!

Still chuckling, this should be worth a free subscription to a magazine that prints tips! Alas, I'm

using a laptop and I can just see hubby's face if I carried in a container of cream and said "open your computer, please"...

chances are that if it tastes good it IS good...

dairy products let you know when they turn bad.

Oh no, I know it was good (as in safe) - 'already eaten.. Just wondered if what I made...

was similar to crème fraiche... I think it was, except that from now on I will use my computer ;o)

Creme fraiche and sour cream are pretty much interchangeable

as I understand it. I mostly see questions about it from folks who can't get sour cream and want a sub. Creme fraiche apparently won't "break" when heated, as sour cream may.
