Did I ruin my silver-plated spoon?

I let it soak in the sink and forgot I had added bleach to the dish detergent. Got the rest of the dishes sparkling clean, but now my silver-plated spoon is black and scratchy looking. Does anyone know if there is a way to de-oxidize it? I thought i remembered something about aluminum foil, but I'm not sure of the details.

TIA!!

Silver polish.

I bleached some silver one time and it polished without problem. It was sterling, not silverplate so I hope you get the same results.

I don't think you ruined it...just oxidized maybe? Either polish, as arriba suggests or

take a cake pan, line it with aluminum foil, add hot, hot water, a couple scoops of baking soda and your spoon. The hot soda reacts with the aluminum to remove the stains.

But I've never found that method work as well as silver polish.

Good, thanks arriba and Mar - I thought I chemically

changed it or something, or even removed some of the silver. But if it' a deposit, maybe just cleaning it will work. I'll try it. Thanks (and thanks to charley too).

It works pretty well if salt is used with the water and the alumilnum.

The salt breaks down into its na and cl ions and a soulution with this will displace the sulfur compound that stained the silver without any effect on the silver. The polish has an abrasive which does have a small effect on the silver.

Thanks - I polished them, before realizing that

it would scratch/dull the silver.( No more black, but it is a little less shiny than my other ones. Not too bad, though.
