Did my KA stand mixer just die?

I got it 1 yr + 1 month ago and have used it *maybe* 4 times (all very light duty).

I was beating egg whites and it suddenly made a noise that sounded like the beater dropped and was hitting the pan. I kept checking but it wasn't till after I noticed black oil leaked out from some area near where you attach the paddle/whisk.

So it now makes a horrible rattle sound if I turn it on. Does anyone have any advise? (Yes, I cheaped out and bought a refurb directly from KA because I wanted the $$$$ brushed nickel) Called KA and they said that because it's over a yr (standard warr and well over the 6 month refurb warr) they won't do anything except give me a repair shop name. Actually they were very nice, but when I put the mixer on speaker phone they said, the oil is an easy fix but the noise..."yeah, that sounds bad."

Anyone repair one of these? Geez, they break after 4 uses? Should I just go buy a new one?

I've had mine since 1992 and use it multiple times a week. I knead bread dough...

...a lot.

It's still going strong.

It was probably not checked out properly when it was refurbished. I would write KA a letter and let them know how disappointed you are. This is not typical for their equipment, and they know it.

They should be able to help you.

Maria, like Michael I also got mine in 1992 and it has mixed 100's and 100's of batches of cookies

over the years, along with all kinds of other stuff. No problems yet.

I seem to remember a thread where Deb in MI got a new mixer from KA because of a problem she was having. Maybe you need to talk to the same people she worked with?

It's not as bad now...the sound is just bad on start-up then is pretty ok.

It was making a real racket there for awhile.

Yes, she told me the oil leak was b/c I didn't use it often enough.

She said the oil inside is like Crisco and if it sets it can get all gunked up which springs a leak.

So I guess I just don't bake enough...I guess my KA is not feeling the love...I guess I need to love...er..use it more or it will need to pick-up the shattered pieces of it's life and move on. Maybe it dreams of a family that makes bread everyday. Heck, me too...but sorry KA you are the carb maker, no can do! smileys/smile.gif

I would take it in for repair. Mine is a Mark 4 from 1963, sometimes I don't use it for months,

Sometimes, when my mom was using it during my littlehood it got used daily. They are workhorses and should carry on forever. I'm sure it can be fixed for you.

So sorry though, waaa!

Awwwww, that is indeed a precious memory. I wish I had my Mom's old Sunbeam. I think it was pink

and I thought it was so ugly, at the time.
