Disappointed in fresh garbanzo beans

I was to see fresh garbanzo beans for sale.. I vacillated between roasting in a hot pan and boiling. Decided to go with the hot dry pan because my cast iron skillet was already out and still warm. They were no better than edamame, significantly more expensive, and way harder to eat. Am I missing something?

Probably not.

I have that happen fairly frequently but I figure it doesn't matter. I can tell myself I've tried one more thing I never had before and cross it off the list.

I had the same experience. Very dull, and a lot of work. They are a big deal at our Mexican market

when they're in season, but no Mexicans I know can tell me how to prepare them.

Interesting, I've read several articles recently about how they're becoming increasingly grown in

the US. We'll probably see more recipes and a push for consumers to purchase. Evidently, they're an easy crop to maintain.

I've tried dried garbanzo beans, and I found that the canned ones are the best for me

I use many dried beans in my cooking and they are all great, but not garbanzo.

That's why I tried them - because I never had before.

Garbanzos are generally one of my favorite beans so I wanted to make sure my disappointment was not due to an operator error!

I asked the Mexican lady working in the produce department.

She boils then in their pod. Her children love them, but due to their expense she rarely buys them. She said they were common in Mexico. Maybe they taste better when they are local but I doubt I'll try again.

Based on what I read on the internet you are probably correct about an marketing push.

I'm OK with them canned except in falafel where I like them soaked but not cooked.

I never have seen a fresh garbanzo bean, had to google it. They look so cute! Sorry it was not

worth the effort.

I told a friend once that I had started using canned garbanzos for my garbanzo bean salad

because it was so much easier, and she looked at me blankly and asked, "Do they come any other way?".

We do prefer the dried for cooked dishes, but for salad, I stick to the canned.

They are downright adorable. But as far as I can tell they have no flavor whatsoever.
