I just got back form the post office and it is on it's way, unfortunately, I think it will have to go to the US first and then onto him, so it may take a while, the postmaster wasn't sure, he had never sent one to US troops, only Australia - he was really nice, he apologised profusely for the cost, he even knocked it down a bit seeing where it was going and it was x-mas... anyway, it's on it's way!

I had baked ANZAC biscuits, which are very historical and I thought, appropriate - but one little furry chap (aka Gomez) decided they were for him when I went out for a minute, he hopped on the back of the sofa and right onto the kitchen counter! He only ate a few, but I have no way of knowing how many he "touched", so I had to send some store bought ones, which everyone here assures me are even more typical. Apparently no one makes them here, they buy them because the proceeds of this specific brand go to RSL (Retired Serviceman's League) so everyone is happy.

I also included some Australian energy bars with "bush" ingredients like wattle seeds, lots of mango, macadamia nuts, etc...

Also some shower and shave stuff, all Australian made, at least it will be different! Oh and some christmas napkins and stuff...

What have you all sent?

I haven't sent mine yet, but here's what I'm planning....

I'm planning to bake:
Cinnamon Sugar Biscotti
Brownies
Sugared Cranberry Trail Mix

I figured I'll put in a little of each, in case the recipient doesn't care for one or the other.

I'm also adding:
Wasabi peas
Kaki mochi (Japanese rice cracker thingies)
Macadamia nuts (is it more common in Hawaii or Australia?? smileys/smile.gif
A Hawaiian Santa christmas ornament

And I'm using a red and green garland as my packing material (I'm hoping they can dress up their quarters with it smileys/smile.gif

Do you think they'll be like kids, trading their lunch box contents? I sure hope that each one of them will find one of their favorites in one of the boxes....

Will be mailing mine on Friday smileys/smile.gif

Gosh, I only sent cookies. I am running a little behind, having company come Friday

then more coming the next week, so I was in a hurry to get my box mailed in order to start cooking, baking, etc. At the post office I asked the worker for the form to fill out to send a package to Iraq and a young man overheard me and asked me if I had a soldier over there. I explained what our group was doing and he told me he just got home from Iraq on Thanksgiving Day. He said the soldiers love getting boxes of goodies and thanked me/us for doing this. It made me feel so good.
Also, he mentioned he hates listening to tv reporting on Iraq, saying we're not hearing the good that's happening there, and he would love the media to report to America all the positive things that are taking place. He was very adamant about that.
I sent chocolate chunk and macadamia nut cookies.
I'm so happy i could be a part of the cookie drop this time.

Sounds like we are getting a great mix--I have one box with lip balm, eye drops, bath soap,

note pads, envelopes, pens, socks for padding.Another with just beef jerky and Pringles. Shipping tomorrow.

Interesting note about ANZAC Cookies...

I'd never heard of them before today. And I found a recipe that had these notes in the header:

This very old recipe started during ration times in World War 2 since not many ingredients were easily available for purchase. The word ANZAC is the abbreviation of our brave soldiers "Australian and New Zealand Army Corps" and the biscuits were named in their honour. They are still a family favourite today in many Aussie homes, and at local cake stalls and fairs.

I'm making the cranberry bliss bars, the ones with oats and no cr cheese or sauce. posted above

somewhere and will drizzle with melted white chocolate---no icing. Will fill the box with snack size sleeves of peanuts and individual packets of crystal lite and holiday mint nougats and packs of gum and tictacs. fun, fun, fun.

Yes, talked to a young man who had just returned after two tours, he said those

things were needed. Also they need bug dope with DEET, I can't find that here. Maybe someone in Hawaii or Australia or Europe can get it. I would be happy to contribute to the cost.
Hugs to all,
Nan
