I have been teaching small cooking classes from my home for the past 6 months. I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of good web sites, forums, etc. on the subject. I teach both adults and children/teenagers.

Thanks!!

Since you both are doing it already....

this is one of the things I wanted to do with my culinary degree but I am already getting requests to teach both in my home and in other's homes. Would you be willing to share your ideas with me? I have no idea what to charge - I don't want to price myself out of the market but I don't want to do it for free. What kinds of things do you do?

TIA

I've done primarily two kinds of classes..

One that is a cooking class for beginners: typically a class to show them how to cook boneless chicken breast so that they are juicy and not overcooked (the students are always amazed), an intersting salad with a simple homemade dressing, a side dish that thefamily would like (lemon roasted potatoes sometimes) and a tasty vegetable (brocolli drizzled with an asian vinaigrette, for example). I typically serve them an appetizer when they arrive and include that recipe among the others. I charge about $30 per person, but they end up getting a full meal!

The other tends to be more gourmet: more sophistated presentations using interesting ingredients (if I can get them; I live in the sticks - it's not like we have access to fabulous ingredients, produce, etc.)

This is usually a more expensive option - $45 or so (once again, they end up eating a full meal).

My classes are usually about 5 people.

Hope that helps,

Deb

How about Prairie Kitchens

I take cooking classes (hands on) by Prairie Kitchesn at the local high school. Their website is prairiekitchens.com. I hope this helps!

I started teaching East Indian cooking classes through a local

community ass'n last fall. I charged $20 per class. Each class was about 2 1/2 hrs long, and we would prepare 2 curry dishes typically, plus rice, plus roti. We would all sit down & eat it together afterwards.

I do all sorts of classes:

I have between 4-8 people. The content of the classes varies a lot. i learned to cook Thai food in Thailand, and I teach those classes quite often. introduction to Thai ingredients, and way of cooking/eating. In addition, I've taught Italian to mothers and their older kids together, which is really fun for all. Also, seafood, gourmet cookies, yeast cakes, etc.
I charge the equivalent of about $35 each (seafood a lot more). The participants organize their own group of friends. I set the table nicely, and buy beer/wine to suit the food. They have a lot of fun cooking and eating each dish, one after the other (not all of them at the end).
