Does anyone grow their own garlic? I'm definitely NOT a gardener, but I really want to try garlic

since homegrown is supposed to have so much more taste than the supermarket stuff. I read that you need to plant individual cloves, but I don't see the point of using the supermarket stuff, which would just yield more mild-tasting garlic. I don't have access to any local farm-grown stuff, which I assume would have more taste, so how do I get high quality garlic to plant?

I grew some type garlic, by accident. I planted what I thought

were chives from my neighbor's yard (she told me that's what they were), and was disaapointed when I saw the stalks starting to die. I waited a couple of weeks and then dug them up, and was surprised to find that they had little garlic bulbs at the base of them. I bruised what was left of the green stalk, too, and it smelled like garlic, as did the little garlic bulb, about the size of a pearl.

I don't think I used them, though, not being sure of what they were. They were tiny, anyway. Maybe all chive plants have the little bulbs? If so, I guess mine just died before really growing.

Sorry I can't help you on your search. Good luck and happy planting!

Garden Centres would carry garlic bulbs for planting or find a gardening mail order company.

I grew Elephant Garlic for several years. I finally got rid of them because

they took so long to mature and were too mild. I think regular garlic takes a long time, as well. I love the garlic I buy at my Raley's supermarket. They are white, huge bulbs with large cloves. Great taste and perfect heat.

I buy new varieties at the farmer's market in fall. I also save some of the biggest heads that I've

harvested that year. I think the best thing about the home grown is the juciness. Worst thing- shelf life. I end up giving alot away.
