Does anyone have an induction single burner unit? Googling brings up 4 or 5

with different settings and, from the reviews on Amazon, the quality of the units vary.

If you have one does it do what you expected and what kind is it? I know they require flat bottom pots and pans that attract magnets.

I got my tax refund and I need to stimulate the economy.

I just bought one from Costco online - it really does boil water in under a minute>>

that being said, when I was trying to simmer a curry last week, it was either boiling madly or not simmering - maybe I just haven't figured it all out yet (not that there's much to learn, other than getting the right pots!). I can tell you that some of my flat-bottomed, stainless steel pots did not work. The bottom has to be quite thick - what happens is the unit won't even turn on if it's not the right material/thickness.

I've used one at the store where I am teaching classes. It is a Viking and I'm told it cost about

$500.00. This particular one is fairly old and has gotten a lot of use and now only works with stainless steel pans, though they say it used to work with Le Creuset.

It is amazingly fast, and I believe it is low in energy use. I was reducing stock for a sauce and I burnt it to a crisp right in front of the class. I had to take the pot home to soak overnight and return it the next day.

One thing to get used to is that the pan must lie flat for there to be heat. If you lift it to toss or tilt is to baste, you lose heat for a moment.

 
Excellent point! I knew the pots had to sit flat but never thought about tossing or tilting...
