a friend and ex NYC guy was talking about NY butter cake and this is how he describes it: a soft white cake with butter flakes baked on top

I remember all the other NYC food stuff we've been talking about but I don't remember this cake. evidently it was sold in coffe shops and bakeries. every search I do for a NY butter cake comes up with something very different than this description and I'm stumped and intrigued all at the same time.

that's what I thought he was talking about too. I'll email him the recipe

and see if he thinks this is what he remembers. it was NY crumb cake and NY butter cake, I already sent him the recipe you just linked to for the crumb cake smileys/smile.gif

I as also thinking it might be a Moravian Sugar cake.

thanks

Moravian Sugar Cake recipe

Moravian Sugar Cake
2Pkg. dry yeast
1/3C sugar
1C warm water
2TBS dry milk powder
2TBS instant potato flakes
3/4 tsp salt
2 3/4C flour
2eggs
1/3C butter, melted
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2C or more butter
Sprinkle yeast on warm water. Stir to dissolve. Add dry milk, potato flakes, sugar, salt and 3/4C flour. Beat 2 minutes on medium speed. Add eggs, 1/3C butter and 1 C flour. Beat 2 minutes on high speed. Add 1C flour. Beat by hand with wooden spoon to make a very soft dough. Cover. Let rise until doubled--about 1 hour. Beat down. Let rise again and beat down. Let rise a third time. Stir down. Spread in a greased 12X17 pan. Let rise until very puffy but not doubled.
Make a mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the top of dough. Make deep indentations with your finger over surface of dough. Drizzle melted buter over dough. Bake at 375* for 15 minutes or until golden.
