does anyone recognize this mushroom?

Is it's name Hatshetsup or Nefertiti by any chance?

I think it looks like a small Egyptian mummy talisman.

But it could be Mary in disguise after she was discovered in a potato chip here locally last week.

I buy them frequently from a mushroom farmer here...

and he either labels them King Pleurotus or Oyster King. I mention both because I've seen really inconsistent mushroom labeling here! "Far West Fungi", in SF's Ferry Marketplace, is launching their website and based on their shop (and how seriously they take fungi) I'd expect it to become a good resource fairly soon for both detailed mushroom information and recipes. I've linked to their site if you want to check back as they build it.

They're lovely mushrooms, just don't have the intense 'meaty' flavor I like from my favorites (matsutake, porcini, steinpilz, portobello).

Trumpet Royale

Well, that there mushroom is a Pleurotus eryngii, aka King Oyster, aka Trumpet Royale. Frankly it's not a very pretty specimen. For better looking ones visit www.mycopia.com. Our farm actually created the Trumpet Roayle name to describe our better strain of king oyster. -- These are meaty mushrooms with a firm texture and are available under the Mycopia brand name at Whole Foods in Northern California and in the Midwest as well as a scattering of other stores.
