Does anyone shop at Aldi's? I just recently discovered this store...

at first I was put off by all the generic brands, and I haven't been able to buy certain generic items (that's my gag factor kicking in), but I have been pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the food that I have bought there. I am especially happy with the price and quality of their produce. That is the one thing that has shocked me by my move from the West Coast to the Midwest, is the price of produce. It is at least 3-4 times the price that I used to pay. If anyone else is shopping there, can you direct me to any items that are particularily good? Thanks!http://www.aldifoods.com/

I have friends in Kansas City who moved to Phoenix. They complained that...

...nothing here compared to the prices and quality of Aldi's.

They moved back to Kansas City.

It's a German company and they often get in some nice German Stollen and cookies and chocolate etc.

Mom used to shop there regularly for certain things, and the "generic-ness" of the products is better quality than other generics I have purchased. Just my opinion though. I always thought it smelled a bit funny in the store. Kinda like the old cheese stores up in Wisconsin smileys/smile.gif No Aldi's up here though.

I often shop at Aldi's when I'm at my in-laws in England. Didn't realize they were here...

I've always found them to be competitively priced there with decent food.

Just recently learned it's the same company that owns Trader Joes! The one near us is terrible for

produce. I'm disappointed every time I purchase fruit or veggies. I do use some of the chocolate and sugars for baking but I much prefer Price RIte. Great produce, and not only gereric brands.

We have one about 2 minutes from here..

they have been here for several years, and when they first opened, I thought it was the worst place on the planet that attracted the worst people on the planet. I have not been in there for years, although I understand that there was a huge overhaul and now they are a little... there is no delicate way to say this.... cleaner. The place was a pit before. I think I need to stop in and give it a look-see since it has been renovated.

To be honest, I am a grocery store snob... the Aldi's I go to is very

clean, it is in a newer section of St. Joseph.
There are many people there who are on tight budgets, read seniors. Since I love seniors, in general, and I am never in a rush, it works for me. It might be just mine, but the produce is the freshest I have seen in this city, other than the Farmer's Market. I bought 8 oz. of perfect white, tight capped mushrooms for $.99, Haas avocados for $.59, triple peppers (red, yellow, and green) #1.39, whole frozen chickens for $.49/lb, a whole Butterball smoked turkey for $1.23/lb. etc. They carry the Kirkland brand of products, but I am not sure they are the Costco Kirkland or not.
To be honest, the first time I went there, I went ewwwwwwwwwww, generic, but pretty good produce. Since then, I have had cukes and peppers mold in my crisper from my major chains here, so I decided to give them another try. I am very glad I did. I did see the Stollen there today, and thought it looked very good, but since hubby is the one with the sweet tooth, I opted not to buy it. I have to admit, that I am a bit of a grocery store snob. In Minneapolis where I grew up, we had Byerly's, Jerry's and Lund's; all very nice markets. San Diego was a bit of a let down, but had started to get some very nice markets. St. Joseph is even worse. I do not get into Kansas City very often, but I think that is going to have to change. Luckily, I go to visit my sister in MN, and they just opened up a Trader Joe's there, so I can get my fix when I visit.
I have been to Aldi's a few times now, and the produce has just been outstanding everytime, so I am very happy. It does have a Trader Joe's feel to it. The frozen foods, condiments, etc.

*whew!* I am so glad I'm not the only one.I'm a grocery snob too (and finally out of the closet! smileys/smile.gif

Having moved from California last year, I'm suffering the same fresh produce shock.

But there is an Aldi's in town. At first, I didn't realise it was a grocery store, it looked like an auto parts store to me. One day, I noticed people coming out of there with shopping carts, and said 'Aha, maybe that is a grocery store". I only went once, but I found the most wonderful roses there at a great price. I'll go back and check out the produce.

I love the midwest, but I do miss the great fresh produce and the flowers at a reasonable price. Went back for a visit last month and had to visit the San Francisco Farmers market and Trader Joe's.

I'm only 4 or 5 hours from Minneapolis, so may have to make a trip to Trader Joe's.

Oh DawnMO...you must have lived in my neighborhood!! ....

and I'm a store snob too. There, it's out. I shop between two so I can get all the products I'm looking for. As far as Aldi's goes...there is one by Lund's on Penn, but I've never been in it. It always looks so empty from the street. But, my coworker goes there for the plain YOGURT. She claims it's the best and is the real deal. She thinks it's because it's European. Not the foo-foo yogurt sold here. I'll stop in Aldi's now that it's being discussed. One trip through and I'll be able to tell if it's for me. And I'm so happy about that new Trader Joe's...we just flew through there one time and I want to go back to really see what's there. It looked fun. (P.S. I still do Jerry's. It's improved so much over the last several years!!)

Dawn and Carol, I had your situation in reverse many years ago, moving from the midwest to CA. I

was so amazed at the produce. That was in the day of iceberg lettuce as the only lettuce in the midwest and the rows of romaine, leaf lettuces, etc were so wonderful to me. I learned to love salads while there and still remember the wonderful produce aisle. That was Safeway back then, but as I said many years ago. The lettuces were all of 39 cents a head! When I go back to Missouri to visit my dad, what I really miss is good bread! In his fairly rural area, it is all soft and white. No sourdough, crusty french or artisan breads at all.

I remember my friends telling me that Aldi's tries to open stores across the street from...

...major supermarkets. Shoppers typically get everything at Aldi's they can, and then go across the street to the supermarket to get what they can't get at Aldi's.

I do the same with Trader Joe's.

I do business with Trader Joe's' wholesale offices in Pasadena. I believe they are not owned...

...by Aldi's, but they are connected.

The last time I discussed this with them, they said they were owned by one of the German brothers who also own Aldi's, but they are a separate entity.

Trader Joes moved from Pasadena to Monrovia a few years ago- I only

mention it cause I am from Arcadia, the next town over!!! And its so trivial, who else would bring it up but one home grown nut like me!!
you would think our TJ's in Monrovia would be something special then, huh?? But NOOOOOOOOO!!!

Wow, Curious! Where does your dad live?

I live in a rural area but we have good breads available. PM me if you want to. I'd like to hear about it, if you don't mind.

Thx
