Does fresh green cabbage have a "pong" when sliced thin, such as for coleslaw?

I picked up a quick-sale head of green cabbage and began slicing it very thin -basically shredding it. I had washed it, but I noticed it had a strong odor when I halved it. Once I rinsed it, the odor went away. Did I release the pong by cutting it, and is this normal? I hate to throw it out.

I will confess to buying pre-shredded cabbage most of the time, and it never smells.

What's the deal?

I think this is normal. was it quite compact? maybe more "fragrant" when compact. if it wasn't

turning black in spots or slimy, it should be quite good. I always notice a cabbage smell when slicing it up.

Okay. Thanks for the info. I'm so protective of our health these days. We can't...

...afford any "down time" due to illness, whether it is from our food or any other source.

The only "pongs" knew when I was younger were "Pongo" the dog, "Pong" the video game. . .

and "ping-pong" the table tennis and "PONG" the sound of a ball hitting the side of the house!
