newspaper....I looked for a different twist on the regular food columns and as there is not the plethora of foodie options available here I looked at what we have a lot of and that is 'tourism'...ah, a huge amount of different nationalities so I came up with the idea of starting from the 1st ethnic group to be found on the island (and actually resided or still resides) and wrote some info on them and then a recipe or two. Of course slavery/African comes in a lot but I am happy with this as I know Africa and her recipes....(ah, dont read that I am happy with slavery!!)
These first (in that they are from the 1400 -1800..)recipes are a hit and miss affair as they were cooked so long ago but the column has received favourable comments....I was also a bit taken aback at the first couple of columns being 'proofed' and then edited to read wrong but after bringing this to the attention that I am English after all and so I should have the column written in English etc...for the most part they leave it as received.
I am having fun researching the recipes and the ethnic groups...there are some 132 groups actually living on island.
I would be grateful for any ideas re old recipes that I could possibly incorporate too....I believe there to be a few Czechs, Bulgarians and Slavs also residing here so am looking at when they arrived and hoping to have a recipe or two from each of those countries as well.
The main criteria is that as we get closer to modern day arrivals of these folk the recipes would need to be tried and true...which I simple cannot do to each and every recipe from lack of time.
