By no means would this be considered gourmet food. I generally have to omit the green peppers as the teenagers in our household do not yet appreciate them. I also double the recipe and make this in a 9.5 x 13.5-inch glass baking pan. Oh BTW, although the recipe does not call for any cheese, we add either a mexican blend of cheeses or american slices during the last few minutes of baking . . . just enough to be nice and gooey.

Serve with a nice side of tossed salad.

TEXAS HASH

1 tsp. oil

1/2 medium onion, chopped

1/4 - 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped

1/2 lb. ground beef

1 8-ounce can tomato sauce

1 8-ounce can water

1/3 cup uncooked rice or 1 cup uncooked macaroni noodles (we generally use the noodles)

1/2 tsp. chili powder

1 teaspoon salt

dash of pepper

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Saute green peppers and onion in oil.

3. Add ground beef and fry until all red is gone.

4. Stir in remaining ingredients; pour into casserole dish.

5. Cover with foil and bake 1 hour. Remove cover during the last 15 minutes of baking.

One more thing to note: I double the onion in place of the bell pepper.

Or just one large onion is more than enough for a double recipe.

I make a very similar dish using a package of taco seasoning. Then

serve it with garnishes of sour cream, green onions, cilantro, pickled jalapenos and cheese to sprinkle on as your heart desires. Then we crunch it down with tortilla chips. Thanks for the reminder. It's been ages since I made this, and it's snowing like the dickens outside and this would be a good warm-up meal today.

Mom used to make this with

the double onions and no bell pepper. She added egg noodles. Haven't thought of this in years. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the warm welcome AngAk! I'll be sure to try it your way.

I would have never thought of using a package of taco seasoning. Thank you!
