It was the walking! Many many miles per day to walk off these

heavy teutonic hedonistic pork fests. I also usually skipped lunch or had a snack between the big German breakfasts and dinners.

Breakfast in our Dresden apartment after buying too many sweets at the bakery: The giant chocolate coated ring is a slice of Saxon Baumkuchen--a cake roasted on a spit with successive layers "painted on" as the previous layer bakes, also Dresden Marzipan Stollen, Chocolate Hazelnut Müsli and, what else?, Nutella to spread on everything:

Thanks SO much for sharing these. I grew up with some of this food so it's a stroll down cholesterol

lane for me. Love those knoedel and who can't just go bat-sh*t over deep-fried hocks? So, in your now thoroughly educated palate's opinion, what one dish is a must have for our next "do"? Desserts are another whole matter, though.

OMG. I'm transported back to summer 1972. Olympics. Ratzkeller and tables full of all sorts of

nationalities---the common language was English, kind of, and it was SO awesome. and the deli photos----I remember buying all sorts of wonderful meat and veggie salads for a midday treat(we students were fed in the Red Cross tent cafeteria thing---lots of huge dumplings and same same every day). Oh, and the pastry mushrooms---forgot about those darlings. Nice lederhosen! thanks for this trip down memory lane, even if it makes me have pangs of longing way down in my gut.
