Everyone else seems to be happy, but I am NOT . . .

I can no longer access posts without logging on. I have to scroll down to log on. When I am FINALLY logged on I have to scroll down to get to the tab to get to the swap. Then I have to go to the end, I have to scroll up to get to the last post. So many extra steps that seem useless.

For me, personally, this sucks. I don't often post, but I am a CONSTANT lurker, checking in several times a day. I loved that I had a shortcut that I could click on and all I had to do was hit "end" and I would be at the last post in the thread. I had no problem clicking on to see the posts. It was fun - I could be in and out in 15-30 seconds - just checking in to see what's new.

Now, I can't check in during the day. Log-in, scrolling down to log-in, scrolling down, clicking to get to the swap, clicking to get to the bottom post, then having to scroll up to get to the last post, then having to get to the post.

Sorry . . . too many steps/clicks, etc. for me to be able to access. I am horrible disappointed, as my once 30-45 second check-in to Finer Kitchen a couple of times a day during stressful work days were a welcome respite during the day. I HATE the fact that you have to log in to read the posts and subsequent answers - way too many steps to do this discretely in the office during the day now.

I am feeling now as disappointed as when Gail's collapsed. (I was one of the VERY first to complain about the new format when it was implemented.) I have loved this site even though I mostly lurk and only occassionaly contribute.

Mimi, the graphics are spectacular. I just don't have thte time during the day to check in with all the additional steps to check in as I once did any longer.

If anyone has an suggestions on how to make this easier, please, please let me know. Everyone else seems thrilled, so I am sorry to be a sore loser on my part.

My best to you all.

I don't have any of those problems. It works just like the old forum on FK. I log in once and it..

..."remembers" me. I don't have to log in again.

I go straight to the forum and once it loads, I hit my END button and it goes right to the bottom of the board like it always did.

Are you using Mozilla? I use IE.

I don't understand your difficulty.

Michael

I don't understand all the things on the bottom.... all my links for login, etc. are at the very top

including the "all forums" and "search" tab

Sorry you're unhappy Magnolia. But you don't have to log in to read the posts.

I read this one not logged in, you just have to log in to answer, like it has always been. (Except the Who are You and Larder Barter which you've always had to log in to see). Is anyone else finding that they can't read the posts unless they log in? If so please let me know.

Also you shouldn't need to scroll down to log in, there is a login link at the very top of the page, above the green.

Ah! and now I see Mimi has put lots of other links in the header! I like that!

* The Recipe Swap
* Kitchen Tips
* Menus
* Tried & True Recipes
* Diet WOEs
* The Larder Barter

All at the top!!!

You do have to click that little box on the login window that says "remember me"... AND

your computer preferences have to be set so the computer doesn't clear out your cookies folder until you tell it to.

I was not sure...

about the link to the Larder Barter at the top there. I wanted to promote it, but at the same time, it's one of the two forums where you must be registered and logged in to see. If you're not logged in and you click on that link, you get a message saying "You don't have permission to view this forum. Please log in" (or something like that). Not sure if I should leave it like this, or remove the link. I *do* want to keep it that you have to be a registered user to see it. Nobody wants to initiate an exchange with a total stranger. Thoughts on this appreciated.

But glad you like it, I think it's way better than having to click on the T&T link to get to the other forums, which made very little sense! :eek:)

Once you log on and check "remember me" click "Eat.at Recipe Swap" at that point SAVE as >>>

a Favorite. When you select that favorite next time you won't have to log on and you will be taken to the swap page. You can then press End and you will be taken to the bottom of the page. Yes, you will have to scroll up a bit but souffles fall too. smileys/smile.gif

That's why I hate to make souffles! I hear what magnolia is saying.

I hate change. I hate all the garbage at the end that means I have to scroll constantly. I really don't see that it is important. But...I don't have to log in each time. Click on "remember me" magnolia. I really wish I could add a great recipe to this...sigh.

Edited to add:
I wish I didn't have to scroll down to read each post after I open it. The bottom line...too much scrolling

You all that are complaining that you must scroll down. . .

You do realize that you DON'T need to use your scroll wheel/button on your mouse, don't you? I just drag the scroll bar down--zip-- it is down.

Yes you can look at posts without logging in. You do need to log in to post a response.

I am using Firefox and everything works fine.

And orchid, you say you hate change--do you hate to wear new clothing, do you hate to try a new restaurant, a new dish, a new recipe. All of those involve change of some sort. This board change-over, yes it is change, but change to preserve and continue in a darn-near identical format what this board was about at the old place (unlike that change from GAil's to Epi Swap--IMHO that was change for the sheer ability to change, just to say, whoo-hoo, we're brand new and we don't give a hoot who or WHAT we dump to change).

I keep telling myself, use it or lose it. Change is good especially in small increments such as the change-over on this board. Keeps the ol' brain cell in shape (too bad it doesn't keep the rest of me in shape!)

And yes I know that sometimes change seems like ATTEMPT to use it because you are losing it, but keep with it, keep trying and you won't lose it.

What's that line from Queen's "We are the Champions?" -- "I consider it a challenge before the whole human race that I never lose!"

To paraphrase the above, "I consider it a challenge before the whole of my self that I never lose track of how to keep up on changes. . . "... I know, I know, doesn't really fit. . .

Get over it!

Someone has offered you a free site in which to meet and share. There is always someone who will complain about something. I do not mind logging in, or having to prove that I am not out to spam other people.

After having the Epi site, this is a gift. Thank you Mimi!

You have to do what MIchael says - forget the old swap in your favs.actually delete it..

click on this and make it your new fav.
Then put in your info and do click remember me and you should not have to log in.

If you only have to zip down with the side bar then if should not be a problem.
I am only thankful we still have the swap.

You may need to check your cookie settings as Mimi explains here (see link)

After I set my login this site is working just like the FK site did for me. The header/ads make for a bit of scrolling but if you use the page up/down, arrow, and end keys it should help.

NFRC/FYI: if scrolling is an actual pain issue (said the girl who starts PT tomorrow) just thought I'd share a couple of nifty items my ergo dept at work gave me that I really like.

1) a Rollermouse; this a tray that sits under a keyboard replacing your mouse

2) Xkeys; additional external keys that you program to do whatever you want. I like it b/c I can have up/down/end keys on my left side too (if I place the keys to my left side -- they can go anywhere). I can also program text/links/actions/whatever into a key so things I might type often I can plug into any doc or email by pushing one button - love that.

I've used the rollermouse for years and the xkeys for about 6-7 months. Love them both. I haven't used a mouse in years.

...Just thought I'd share in case it might be of interest to anyone. Really wish I knew about the xkeys earlier.

Hi Magnolia! For what it's worth, here are my suggestions

original post:
"Log-in, scrolling down to log-in, scrolling down, clicking to get to the swap, clicking to get to the bottom post, then having to scroll up to get to the last post, then having to get to the post."

1 - Log-in: I don't have to log in to read the posts, just to make a new post, check your PMs, etc. Maybe what's throwing you off is the fact there there is a big "Log On" when you come to eat.at. It's right there at the very first line, in between the // //s and I think it's there to let new users know that there's a log-in option to do more stuff. It's just the default that Mimi set up. If you've already logged in once, and clicked the "remember me" box, just ignore that top log-on option. I do.

2 - Scrolling in to log in: this should now not even be an issue if you clicked "remember me"; but yes, the first time you logged in, it's a little bit down there on the page.

3 - Scrolling down: Yes, some items are a bit further to get to, which I have not gotten used to yet, but... maybe this was done so a big ol' ad wouldn't hit you in the face as soon as you came to the site? But if the ad section was visible when you first saw the page, maybe more people would click on it, thus promoting more income for the site - if that's how it works.

4 - Clicking to get to the swap: Not really sure what you mean - the link for the swap is right there in the heading.

5 - Clicking to get to the bottom post/bottom of the page: This should only be a one- or two-step "end" click, or at most, a few "page down" clicks, no?

6 - Then having to scroll up to get to the last post: Yes, see #3. This is because of the large white space down at the bottom, near the Paypal option.

7 - Having to get to the post: I see your frustration by the time you get to this point; but now you're at the post, all ready to read, no? ;o)

I think the biggest things to get used to are that permanent "Log On" phrase at the time (not sure how else Mimi could do it, though, unless just having one "log on" spot, not two) and also the large spaces to scroll over (top and bottom) - not sure why they're there.

Chin up! It'll get better the more you use it.

As someone who used to check Epi while at work, I see her frustration though. But the more

we all use it, with the proper "Favorite" saved, the easier the small changes will be to get used to.

When Epi threw us under the bus, we all got a little gun shy! Mimi, you are NOT in this category! :eek:)

I think it's fine the way you have it - the Larder Barter link

I think if you aren't logged in, you should get a message saying "You don't have permission to view this forum. Please log in."

Unless you already removed the link you're talking about. I don't see ANY links at the bottom of the page, so maybe you did remove it already...

Dawn, That was a very thought out, detailed response. I too, want to make it work for Magnolia. I

logged out this am, and tried to see what she was experiencing. I was able to "bookmark" the forum page, and was able to go directly in, w/o going through the main eat@ page....If you click remember me, it is even easier, because you are logged in....

Magnolia, look through suggestions above, and let us know how it works for you.

Best,
Barb

Hi Folks and MIMI!!!!! thank you for all this...I am lurking lots these days and. not happy 'bout...

one thing...........
I dont have time to do much fiddling around to see the posts...however Everything works OK for me, I guess, just that the HEADING ( nice art work) and FOOTER are all far to LARGE...take up too much space...could these be made a wee bit smaller...then a glance at the screen shows more than a couple lines of the swop........
cant stand all the yucky adverts.....sigh...but I guess we need them.
