Family dinner fail

I wish I'd thought to save the original post before I hit send with "Family Dinner Fail" as the heading. Not the most positive start but I was bummed!

We had the 3 kids over for Tex-Mex meal and everything went against me! Including dropping the huge Gordon's size jar of maraschino cherries and having it hit the floor just so perfectly that the well sealed lid popped open and spilled. Waaaaaah! Have recovered but started the post on the 16th for sympathy from our tribe who have also experienced meal failure. Mistakes made were mine - except for that veg chili. Still don't know how it went so bad except for the chili powder and maybe the crushed tomatoes. The chili tasted like spaghetti sauce with chili powder instead of Italian spices. I now know that I shouldn't have tried out the IP for Mark's Borracho Beans which I have made "perfectly" so many times on top of the stove, shouldn't have substituted Queso Blanco for cotija in the Esquites, and not quite sure about how to get thinner corn tortillas, but will be looking instead of buying just any ole brand. Everyone loved the Topopo Salad, Dh's sangria and the peach crisp. Colleen

How do U store yr chili powder? I have always kept mine in fridge or freezer so it won't turn brown

Sometimes the best preparation fails you smileys/frown.gif

I started the day ready to cook with recipes, ingredients and plans in place, but this meal was not in the cards for me. Kids were so very polite in their dissection of each dish! Next family dinner is on DS's birthday - we'll be going out smileys/wink.gif Colleen

Yes, stored in the fridge. Penzy's do have a tendency to be more-so

I often use way less when I'm using any Penzy spice blends.

All I can figure is bad chili karma smileys/smile.gif Colleen

It has happened to most of us, I'm thinking, has happened to me. Just so you know, I quite enjoyed

the way you wrote it up the first time. Quite resourceful, made me laugh.
Except for the jar of maraschino cherries, my sympathy on that. Such a sticky mess.

About the corn tortillas, can you find Mission brand? They are thinner than some we have here and quite soft and pliable. They are also 6 inches in diameter instead of 5. Makes a big difference to me when I'm building my fish tacos as I like to load them up with the shredded cabbage, etc.
