find the right sort of oil for the burners.....
We used Metholated spirits back home in SA all those years ago and it was all but finished when I dug out the bottels...stupidly this I only checked on late Friday evening....
what to do...
Well, I had to pick up my daughter from the airport at 2.00 so I planned to fit everything in at the same time but it would cut things a bit tight...still, I could do it all, no problem.
Sat morning had me at ACE..."nope sorry we only sell cans of liquid called "fondue" and we are OUT of it now" ...right, of course... Ha...
"I also need some lamp oil as I needed to top my table lamps up".... but that too they had sold out of.....
Gee...so a quick dash through the dreadful traffic to the hotel store where I was wandering around looking for lamp oil, and I have to say my mind was off kilter getting a bit nervous about the fondue oil etc so I was not really deeply aware that it was almost closing time.....
a chap comes up to me and says "Getting True?"...
um "Yes thanx, but I need some lamp oil"
With that the store was being closed up...the hurricane shutters were being pulled down, the staff were closing down the till...no warning being given.
So I jumped about a bit saying this is ridiculous as they could not raise the warehouse.......Closed warehouse before stored has cashed up????, not on!
Anyway, long story short, they did get the warehouse chap and asked for some lamp oil..
"One or two?" she says to me rather rudely...
"Well", I said feeling very pressurized, "Just one, but how does it come, what size bottles are there?" Thinking about litre size, easy to pour, sort of bottles.
"It comes in a box Ma'am, give her your card"....so I gave the girl standing next to me my card and she dissappeared off to the other till to run it through...and I asked the lady in front of me how much was this actually going to cost....she fiddled around, tore the receipt out the machine and said "$84.78, Ma'am"...
Oh my goodness...by now the staff were going out the side door and I am left with a huge bill for one small...?????.....bottle of lamp oil.
Well, I thought, I'll come back Monday morning and make a stink I have to go and find burner oil still and I have stuff to prepare yet....then my daughter called, could I pick them up at the airport in 1 1/2hours later than planned as the plane was still sitting on the ground in FL having it's speedometer or something replaced...Of course.......
I decided to just be cool, take it easy, not get the proverbial in a tangle and drove to the Ships Chandlers store...after all yachts use some sort of oil for their stoves.....
I was in luck but a bit concerned with the product I bought...."Denatured Spirits" Solvent was written underneath.....Solvent???
I then joined friends at a sports bar to watch South Africa beat the All Blacks soundly at rugby..."Go Bokkies, Go"
Then I went to the beach at the foot of the runway to take a pic of the plane coming in and then picked up the family.....a month ago I saw them off cruising the Caribbean up via the Bahamas to the States and now I pick them up at the airport...brown and fit looking and he with a scraggly beared...hahaha, real yachty scruffy looking bunch, but they had a FanTasTic time.
And then home to finish preparing......
Actually it worked out just fine, and I did not use any lamp oil as when I opened the box I found 2 HUGE bottles of lamp oil, as my husband fell about laughing he said "One bottle for this life and one for your next life" Hahahahardi-ha very funny dear.
The joys of living in Paradise.
