Foo Foo Donuts and Donut Shops

O.K., so I just had to try the donuts at this new place close to the house that had actually been working part time out of another place north of here and had built up this huge cult following. Fancy and fanciful donuts. So I got a maple bar that had two (thin) slices of bacon on top - $4, and a chocolate cake with chocolate glaze and coconut and sliced almonds on top - $2. I gotta say, I just don't get it...some of the ones I passed up - cake with lots of white icing and frosted animal crackers on top, chocolate with chocolate glaze completely paved with M&Ms, a pink GATORADE flavored one, etc. I could have bought a dozen very nice donuts for what I paid for two. They use upscale and natural ingredients. Gotta admit, the maple/bacon was pretty good but for FOUR DOLLARS? Never again.

I used to adore the strawberry napoleons at La Madeleine, but they changed their pastry cream

and now they are just not the same.
