Food scale: 11 lbs or spring for the 22 lb version? What do you think? Video inside...

I've never seen this on sale, but can use the 20% coupon from BB&B.

Cooks/ATK (at the link) gave a good review. It is $20 more and slightly larger footprint (see sizes side-by-side at end of video) then the 11 lb version. I'd likely store it on it's side in a cupboard so not sure how much difference that would make and would also use it for a shipping scale (but right now I've used my bathroom scale for heavy packages without a problem and do have a small manual postage scale).

So, I was wondering what folks thoughts were on if they ever thought they wished their scale could weigh more. I was thinking something like canning or something where you'd want to put a pot on the scale and measure directly into that.

What are your thoughts?

I would choose the smaller one--I have an 8-lb scale and I seldom need to weigh

anything heavier. If I do I can usually divide it. (It's an old fashioned one with a dial.)

But it's hot a huge price difference and if the size is similar, go for it!

SS or ceramic bowls? Was wondering if I used ceramic for bread it would weight more than 11

However, clearly I have no idea what my ceramic bowls weigh (though normally I do make most things using SS bowls).

Also, thought about jam making - wondering about putting the pot on the scale and dumping things in.

You make a good case for it. (my scale has its own little bowl that holds about 2 lb.

of flour max. If you are putting your larger bowls on the scale and setting it to zero it would make sense to have the larger one.

I also use my scale to weigh packages for mailing, so if that's

something you might do I would get the larger capacity

oh, oh...I'll take some starter, pleassssssse. I finally have fresh yeast and

La Brea's Chocolate Cherry "You may have beat me into total and utter submission once, but I'm not down yet!" bread is still on my list of things to accomplish before I go completely browless.

Mar, you really need to warn me when you put a funny in your posts! Glad your in better spirits!

I put my bowl on the scale, THEN turn it on - it doesn't count the weight of the bowl that way

But starts from zero instead

Unless you plan on production size batches, I don't see where 22 pounds is necessary.

I like measuring spices and mine goes down to 0.5 grams. Does the 22 lb scale go as far in the other direction?

It goes down to 1/8 ounce or 1 gram, same as the other OXO - yours does .5 gram?

I was thinking about measuring into pots for jam or heavy items like potatoes (and for packages), but I'd rather weigh teaspoons, but heard small weighs for spices need another type of (drug dealer) scale.

I was thinking OXO because ATK recommended it (and it can store on it's side).
