For Judy: Arrows Dinner Report

All of my pictures were bad. The light was so low and I didn't want to use flash, but I thought they would turn out. Unfortunately, they're all blobby shadows in shades of black, sienna, brown, and tan. Not much use for anything and they certainly don't do the food justice or even look appetizing. Very disappointing. Anyway, here's what I had for dinner:

Butternut squash soup, very intensely flavored, wonderful rich stock base under the roasted butternut.

Arrows house cured meats: Spiced rubbed pork loin, house-made beef jerky, duck pastrami, and quail sausage with house made pickles and grilled flatbread. (I don't know why they bother with the "house-made" description on some of the items as everything they serve is house made, they cure all of their meats, bake their breads, raise the salad and vegetables in the gardens, and grow the flowers for the table.)

Baby lettuce salad with reggiano parmesan custard, roasted garlic lemon vinaigrette and house made bagel chips

Seared duck breast with rich gooseberry glaze and potato gnocchi; wood roasted duck leg with French lentils, foie gras, and garden root vegetables (this was an amazing plate of flavors and the presentation was stunning. I don't normally like fruit and meat (so un-German, I know), but the gooseberry glaze was an amazingly delicious pairing with the duck breast.)

I don't have the dessert description but it was a chocolate tasting. There were 6 intensely flavored chocolate miniatures: chocolate creme brulee, truffle, petit four, ice cream, and pot de creme (which was nearly a full-sized portion), all very artfully presented as is everything that is presented in front of you.

I had a 2000 Heger Baden Pinot Noir from Baden-Württemberg in Germany (Ihringen/Kaiserstuhl) that was out of this world with the duck.

A Hendrick's Martini with the cured meats (a special small batch gin from Scotland that's flavored with the usual juniper, coriander, angelica root, etc. plus old-fashioned damask roses and cucumbers) and a nice armagnac and coffee with the chocolate.

Another wonderful and truly amazing dining experience at Arrows. You guys should go up there for a special occasion.

Can you post a recipe for the glaze...cape gooseberries or those big green ones. I love..
