Sounds like a can't miss---Where was I going with the downtown question? If and when..
you are in the village you must visit Joe's Dairy on Sullivan St. He smokes mozzarella in the basement ( everyone else just paints with liquid smoke). The stuff is to die for--especially if you get it warm.
The cheese with some good crusty bread; marinated tomatoes or peppers and fresh basil. Heaven!
...but they take time to assemble, what with the folding of ham, slicing of peppers and pickles, boiling of eggs, slathering of potato salad, etc. etc. They were the sort of thing I was thinking about doing for NYE on Saturday, shortly before we were told by Delta that we would not be returning to New York from Prague until Tuesday night, thanks to the blizzard.
Untested and fast was a pork tenderloin with beer and mustard sauce, which would have been gloriously quick, and which we could have served with piles of garlic bread without breaking a sweat, but my track record with untested recipes--especially on holidays--is disastrous.
So spare a thought for yours truly tomorrow, who'll be cranking out a few dozen of those. On the other hand, we're not talking about 400 gingerbread men! smileys/wink.gif
