Bird Pudding

Recipe By : King Arthur
Serving Size : 2 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : For The Birds, Tried & True

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

1 1/2 Pints Suet Or Other Fat
1/4 Cup Unsalted Peanut Butter
1 1/2 Pints Bread Crumbs
1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
1 Cup Sunflower Seeds
1 Cup Rolled Oats
1 Cup Cornmeal
1/2 Cup Sugar

Melt the suet or fat in a large saucepan or kettle. Mix in the remaining ingredients. Pour into a bread pan and chill. To make removal from pan and clean-up easier, line pan with foil or heavy-duty plastic wrap before pouring in mixture.

To serve, slice off an inch or so and put it on a tray type bird feeder or into a suet feeder. Wrap remainder up in plastic and refrigerate.

T &T Martha Sargent's Super Suet Recipe, from Hummer/Bird Study Group...

1 Cup Lard
1 Cup Crunchy Peanut Butter
2 Cups Quick Cook Oats
1 Cup Regular Flour
2 Cups Cornmeal
1/3 Cup Sugar

Melt lard and peanut butter in the microwave or over low heat. Stir in remaining ingredients and pour into square freezer containers about 1/2" thick to fit your suet basket. Store in freezer or refrigerator until ready to use. This makes about 6-8 cakes. (You may want to add a little additional flour in the hot summer to thicken up the mix a bit to prevent any risk of dripping.)

Does your hardware store carry Niger seed? My parents found this at their local

ACE hardware store, a special sock like thing that you fill with the Niger seed, tiny thin black seeds that the songbirds go NUTS over. In fact, they completely ignore the regular bird feeder now and as many as 15 little birds hang on the sock munching away. My dad has to fill it every morning, it's so popular.

Another favorite is to find a nice open pine cone, tie a string on the top area and spread it with peanut butter and then roll in birdseed and hang. Birds need fatty things in the winter. My parents have a suet feeder which is visited by the jays and woodpeckers.

Wish I could have a birdfeeder, had one for a while but my apartment is too high up (8 stories from the street) and the only birds intrepid enough to visit were pigeons. But there is a pair of wild parrots who sometimes visit my fire escape which is great fun to watch, and the cat likes them too!

Enjoy your feathered friends!
