for the person talking about fireflies...see today's Science section @nytimes.com

And speaking of Fireflies, FYI: Synchronized Fireflies...

"Mid-June in east Tennessee means fireflies that flash in unison!

In 1995, scientists confirmed the existence of the Great Smoky Mountain synchronized fireflies, and have subsequently discovered other populations in the Congaree Swamp in South Carolina and other high altitude locations in the Appalachian mountains. As this curious phenomenon remained undiscovered for years, it is quite possible that there are other varieties of fireflies blinking in unison throughout the United States, perhaps even in your own backyard."

See the video link. (Sigh, I've always wanted to see a real Firefly but the cloest I've come is Disneyland.)

Our backyard in Ohio is filled with them at night....but they are

definately not synchornized...that video was amazing!

Maria, you mentioned the fireflies at Disneyland... my son exchanged a ...

...few emails with the guy who invented the firefly effect used in Pirates of the Caribbean -the ones in the bayou near the Blue Bayou Restaurant.

The guy didn't work for Disney, but he took a bunch of his ideas to them, and they bought his method for doing fireflies. He sells kits on the web for putting them in your own backyard, and my son has plans for making them as a DIY project. The pieces can easily be bought at Radio Shack.

Probably way more than you wanted to know, but I found it fascinating!

Michael
