Forget crop circles...check out this rice paddy art!

Wow...I'm so curious...I thought all rices needed a lot of water and

several years ago, I read that the US was one of the top producers of rice. I have visions of flooded rice paddies in Asia...and I just can't wrap my brain around something like that here in the US. Do you know, do they flood the field? or do all the varieties not require the intensive watering seen throughout Asia? I'm so curious now...

Yes they flood... then start spraying on the Deet to repel mosquitos smileys/smile.gif

All of that area is flat as a pancake and there are many rice farmers. In fact, they really should do a study of the area, because burning off the rice fields is actually toxic and the smoke is thick when they are burning.

The rice from my cousin's farm was the best rice I've ever tasted in my life... can't explain why, it just has a wonderful nutty flavor.

Holy cow! Really? I'm fascinated. I wonder where the water comes from? My friend

ran a legendary B&B in Akansas for a number of years...I'm going to have to ask her about her experience there with rice.

I'm curious about where the water comes from. I've heard there are lots of issues surrounding irrigation and water sources and control of the flow, etc. I know some areas are prone to flooding anyway (I'm from the Midwest and recall the Mississippi river flooding on a frequent basis).

I took some classes in environmental politics at the University and the prevailing theory is at some point...people will be doing battle over water. Raising a water intensive crop like rice, I wonder if they're experiencing any of those issues already.

Wow. Thanks cheezz. You've definitely got me thinking!
